Out of the hundreds and hundreds of books I have read, this would be my number 1 book to recommend! I think it had a lot to do with the timing of my reading it. I was in my early 20's and just learning to think for myself.
I got two things out of this book:
The first is I learned to look at things without any preconception. This concept served me well in my job.
The second concept was about religion. I realized any problems I had with religion was with the way I saw it practiced, not with religion itself. It helped me set my own standards to live by instead of waving in the wind depending on what others were saying at that moment.

King Killer Chronicles, not sure if its considered fantasy or sci-fy.

Mote in God's Eye is a fantastic book. I will go with The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson.

Was coming to post this. Arthur C Clarke has many books that often got overlooked because of 2001. I think Rama was his best book. Childhood's End was great too

honestly these 2 books are money but i dont think anyone outside of me has read them.

also laugh all you want but this graphic novel at 1,500+ pages is better than Dune.

there are so many great books mentioned here. I do love the vernor vinge series. Also hitchiker series, enders game, most neal stephenson, hyperion, old man's war.
so many. I think I would go with cryptimicon by neal stephenson as my favorite. Enders game is #2. Then Fire upon the deep by vinge.
