I would love to have only $440 fixed cost a month. Try one car note, a house note, daycare for two kids as well. It sounds like you guys are living within your means which is good though.

Where is "here"? Manhatten?

North of $2000 for rent is high outside of places like NYC and greater Los Angeles.

Everyone involved must be willing to stick to a plan. Don't try to change to change the spending overnight. Treat it like any other goal and works towards it. Analyze your purchases and figure out alternatives. You must factor in entertainment and frivolous shite, otherwise you will go nuts.

To answer the original question, $7k between rent and general living. No car. Public school.

Here are some of mine. They aren't all "fixed" but very consistent:

$47/mo - Cell Phones (2 total @$23.50)
$75/mo - Electric
$30/mo - Gas (gets up to $100 for Jan. & Feb.)
$30/mo - Fiber Internet
$30/mo - Directv
$125/mo - Auto insurance, Umbrella policy and personal articles policy (2 cars)
$417/mo - Property taxes
$40/mo - Personal property taxes/vehicle registration
$140/mo - preschool
$187/mo - vehicle loan
$24/mo - Trash
$20/mo - Sewer
$20/mo - Water
$150/mo - Gasoline for cars
$37/mo - Pest control service
$650/mo - Groceries (family of 5)
$350/mo - Restaurants

Of course this doesn't even cover mortgage, home insurance or retirement contributions.

Utilities, mortgage, insurances, private school, student loans, cable and internet, cell phones, property tax averaged over 12 months = $4000-$4200/month. Would be more but I paid cash for our vehicles.

Ok, that would do it.

While that is normal for your area it is probably twice what you would pay almost anywhere else.

You could save $600 per month if you only bought groceries for the family of 5.

For a family of 4, we spend around 800-1000 a month on groceries. Is that too much? We don't eat out except on sunday after chruch.
