Been an Axis and Allies fan since the 80s. We break out the game for holidays, and wage WWII for days.
Introduced to Axis & Allies around 1984 at LaTech.

1st job out of college introduced my Branch Manager to the game and we'd spend weekends playing, usually straight through to Monday opening.

I'm gonna pick up the Steam online version next 50% off sale.

I wouldn’t consider that a board game, but when played with someone that knows how to play, it is the greatest card game around.

My best single hand score was 19.

5 pages and no Twilight Imperium?

Pussies.

Srsly tho:
Nemesis is awesome as well, it's pretty much "Alien" the board game.

Others that are good:
The Crew - a trick taking space themed card game
Mansions of Madness - fun with the app doing all the explanations
Betrayal at House on the Hill - Scooby-Doo version is the best
Trailer Park Wars - if you feel like drinking and talking shite
7 wonders - It's better the more you play it, because you won't even know what's going on the first three times you play
Monsterpocalypse- Kaiju, nuff said...plays like a board game but is actually a war game, either way its in boardgames form on Kickstarter right now
Dominion is good, but I like Star Realms better as a deckbuilder/draft game...Ascension is also a good option
Brass - is great because you make beer, and railroads and shite

Other comments:
Terraforming Mars - good but it's easy to get fricked by a bad card draw
Pandemic - simple and fun a few times, but leads to one ringleader and a bunch of drones
Gloomhaven - great game, but you die from exhaustion, dumbest part of a great game mechanic
Ankh - meh...I like Rising Sun in the series better, the combogod mechanic is...ehhhhhh

I could advise on just about any game...flavor to taste

DECEPTION: Murder in Hong Kong is far better.
Similar schtik, but no moving around the board with a deeper social deduction formula.

Twilight Imperium is like Risk on heroin.

Nemesis is very intense...everyone is tentatively on the same side, trying to escape a ship infected with biomorph aliens. But the more things you do, the louder the blips get, the quicker the aliens find you and kill you.

In Georgia, usually

I'm sure there's a board game club in the Nola area. I would start with a gaming store.

Nowadays I only really solo play monster wargames. Currently in the late stages of the playing through the December 41 to February 42 Soviet counter offensive.

I don’t play board games often, but when I do it’s definitely Code Names.

My wife once got her partner to correctly name five words from a single clue. It’s still talked about in hushed tones around our household.
