My current one road vehicle was 9% of my yearly salary. Paid cash.

My only non paid off toy at the moment is about 20% of my yearly salary

120k

Paid 42k. 2019 gmc Sierra x31 fully loaded. I buy trucks used with about 20k miles on them

Buying new is a terrible investment. Got 10,500 on trade in an put 7k down. Financed 25k at 400 a month 5 years

I’ll probably pay it off early. Only has 52k miles on it now, so I’ll have it awhile and no truck notes before I get a new one. I don’t feel the need to constantly upgrade trucks as long as it is comfortable, doesn’t give me trouble and can pull my boats then I’m good.

I made 400k I'd have no problem dropping roughly 100-125k on a vehicle

frick that. I’d rather buy something that holds value like land or a nice house. I’d waste money on a nice boat before I’d spend 100k for a truck

You can make a F150 100k. 400k is a lot of money. I'm OT poor in comparison. I probably wouldn't do it but I don't think it would alter my finances much to buy 100k Corvette making that much money

It isn’t nearly as much as it sounds. You’re paying 35-37% tax on half that. You’ll have a more expensive house than normal, which comes with more maintenance. $100k won’t make you go broke, but it is an excessive expense unless you’re going to keep it 10+ years, which few people do.

Would like to see variances to the answer to this.

Go!

Serious post:
-150k/yr
-500/mo on a 2 door, barebones Tacoma without even a key fob [bought before I moved from NY to Nashville near the height of the pandemic]
^List price was 32k--massive rip off but nothing I could do for the time period.
-Triumph Street Triple @ 200/mo.

Anyone in the market for a truck?

I’m a teacher, so there’s that.

I paid 17k for my 2011 Silverado.

My current vehicle cost about 28% of my annual income. A bit more at the time but I don't remember exactly what I made in 2017.
Sounds about right for me, around 30% or maybe even 1/3 factoring in both my wife and I salaries.

We have 1 nicer, more expensive car and 1 considerably cheaper that is 9 years old and paid off.

I'll give a serious answer. We have two new vehicles and our notes are 7% of our gross.

Never let your vehicle payment be more than 10% of your gross income or you start making tradeoffs with your savings for a depreciating asset.

This is assuming you want to save 20% of your income min.
save 20-25% and monthly car payment is about 5% of monthly gross.

People also finance trucks for 84 months like a bunch of dummies. What's your point?
His point is that it's not not remotely stretching thin to own a $120k car if you make $400k a year. Not even close.

I could very easily manage a $100k car with little changes to monthly routine and I don't even make half of that

That being said I wouldn't actually buy a $100k car at my salary, but I absolutely could with zero concern about affording it.
