What is the purpose of Gofundme?

I'm seeing more and more people on Social Media taking to the site looking for donations for everything. Like tagging me and asking me to put up their sad stories looking for money on my social media walls 
Did Gofundme start out with certain purposes in mind and people just hijacked the website?

Cyber begging and another form of welfare.
I bet half of the people asking for money on there look down their nose at the hobo on the street begging for change.
Some of it is legit to help those in desperate need, though.

The purpose is that it is much easier to raise money nation and worldwide for any cause you deem necessary by doing it on a platform like GoFundMe. No phone numbers to dial to pledge your support. No physical paperwork required. A credit card at your convenience and you can help if you so choose.

Intended purpose: help startup businesses get the funding they need to grow large enough to be able to secure traditional funding and investment
Actually used: selfish people hoodwink well-meaning millennials into financing their vacations or luxury lifestyles while using personal tragedy or innovations as bait.

Gofundme basically jumped into crowd-sourcing at the right time. They don't care what the cause is, they take 5% off the top. If you want to give some cuckster $100 to pay for his wife's vagina reconstruction, they'll happily take $5 and roll with it.

It's a convenient way for people to donate money to a fundraiser. There has been a lot of success raising money using Gofundme that it's now being abused. Anyone can start a Gofundme for anything.
