Media is a business. Profits made from uncertainty and turmoil. If everything is fine, they don’t make money.

I've tried so many times to get my mom to turn off the TV, she's in her 70s and all it does is make her worried and anxious...it's awful.

They used to serve a purpose for the people. I'm not sure when exactly that changed, but now their only goal is to get ratings by any means necessary. Now days that means splitting this country and showing everything in a negative light. And also making up shite against the president because he's a meanie poo and doesn't blow them.

I think it came around the time of the 24-hours news channels/cycle. They had to start sensationalising stuff and adding opinions in order to keep viewers watching. It's no longer reporting and allowing everyone to form their own opinions.

Before cable, we had newspapers and 3 networks providing news, generally not too slanted (compared to today). The message was fairly generic, because there were only a few messengers and they all got a ton of ad revenue.
CNN hijacked that news influence from the papers, but we soon found out there's only so many relevant stories in a day nationally. So you started getting more opinion shows.
Now, the internet is making traditional media obsolete, and they're desperate to hold on to the viewers. So it's become a shrill soap opera, focusing on drama to keep you invested.
I used to think we just needed a common enemy (Russia, or a war) to keep us all together and calm things down; but that doesn't solve how CNN or Yahoo gets attention (advertising, etc). Someone has to have a unique or interesting point of view, to keep a base viewership. Right now, it's "hate Trump", or hell, "hate LSU basketball" etc.
