My wife is a teacher and is fluent in English, Spanish, French, and German is her mother tounge. If you learn standard you can understand the root language and it is just a matter of picking up the dialect. My wife speaks French with my mother and grandmother who are Cajun and she would also speak Spanish with some of my Army friends who were Peurto Rican, Dominican, and from LA with Mexican roots. It is the same when we travel to Austria or the Netherlands. So if you learn standard Spanish you can pick out most of the words though there will be a few differences.

Let’s see if you can understand old English after all English is English.

You are caught up on accents.

OP: doesn’t know anything about Spanish and where it’s spoken

Also OP: “I know everything about Spanish and where it’s spoken”

You do realize a lot of countries in Africa use French, Portuguese, English, and Arabic?

Are you going to go to Lubbock Texas and practice it? Do you wish to talk to illegal immigrants who are living in the United States and can not talk English? Visiting Mexico outside of the tourist spots is not safe. Mexico is classified as a third world country. I do not see the appeal of learning native languages for the countries of Africa and I view this similar to learning Spanish. I don’t see a point in it.

Depends on who you are. I'm a rep that covers Austin, San Antonio, and South Texas. I'm always going to spend more time around Spanish speakers then a few random trips to Europe.

The appeal and reason I learned Spanish was lots more money in my pocket.

Knowing American spanish really helped when living in Spain. Their lisp is hard on my ears though.

so all he basically said was that learning spanish was a great way to speaking to those of PR, dominican, or mexican roots.

are you appalled that those folks are not illegal immigrants?

Apparently. I've been all over the western coast of Africa. You go to one country and the official language is English, the next French, the next Portuguese.

Arabic is the most widely used language in Africa... followed by French.

Spain is the outlier in the Spanish spoken. It's not "Mexican Spanish". And you'd still be able to communicate with someone in Spain it's mostly a different accent with some differences in verb conjugation.

It's the 2nd most spoken language in the world, the language spoken by one of our direct neighbors, and the primary language spoken by ~41MM people in the US.

If I were learning a 2nd language it would be either Spanish or Mandarin.

To each his own. I would rather go to Italy and speak Italian than drive to Houston and speak Spanish.
