They do a lot more harm than good. They are not good for society as a whole or even close to it.
I had to go to one of their panels. Blew under the legal limit, a .078. Officer decided it was close enough. Attorney told me he gets bonus and overtime for dui arrests. Anyway, got out of it of course, but went to a MADD panel. I will say the panel was really good. It was 3 mothers who lost children in terrible drunk driving incidents where the driver was totally blitzed, talking over .2. Panels we're powerful, I still remember on of the stories and carried a token they gave out for about a year in my car.
So, I was glad I went to the panel, it was moving and heartfelt. However, MADD as a whole is very bad for society IMO. They lobby for bullshite laws and are intolerant assholes as a group, even though they have some good individuals.

Out of all of the people I know, I think only two of them haven't had a DWI, one being my mom who rarely drinks

They are prohibitionist in ever sense of the word. First it was .1 BAC, then .08 BAC, then it was underage drinking, and then every once in a while you hear about it becoming 25 for drinking or .05 BAC.
Personally I think the only way they stop their business is if drinking is banned altogether.
The real irony I always found is that MADD exists in Canada, yet they have no problem with legal 19 year olds drinking there.

Yeah, it's an easy way for the courts to get $3k out of you.
I never got one back in the day when I was drinking, but I don't know how. Mainly stayed on the roads around campus. Only DUI roadblock I ever went through was in Birmingham and I'd quit drinking hours earlier because it was the Saturday before Mother's Day and I had to drive to see my mother the next day.
A friend of mine, who happens to be a lawyer, the wrong turn on a one-way in Montgomery, right after she moved to town. She'd had a couple glasses of wine at dinner and is a little gal. She blew right at a .08 and the cop arrested her. She went to see the judge and he told her that so far as he was concerned, all she should have gotten was a ticket and a cab ride but that the MADD assholes had someone camped outside his courtroom and if they reduced the charge to careless driving or some such the MADD assholes would fund an opponent against him in the next election.

I went to one of their classes and was very surprised at the spokespersons quote she used over and over:
"I'm not saying you can't have a beer and drive. I'm not saying you can't have two beers and drive. I'm just saying don't have more than two and drive."

You know? I don't have a problem with them for DUI cases. I had to go to a meeting a while back for mine. Sure it sucks and makes you feel like an arse. But I'd rather go to a MADD class than rot in prison for committing murder cause I was an idiot and drove drunk and killed somebody.
This one was kinda weird though. It wasn't a mother who had her killed killed by a drunk driver. Her kid was the drunk driver. Kinda weird to see it from the other side.

They're punishing everyone in an attempt to go after a very small percentage of drivers. There will always be the group that gets seven DUI's. No amount of litigation or campaigning by MADD is going to change that. So what they've pushed is a punishment for everyone by by giving Police Depts a way to raise money.
Its the same logic used by feminists. There will always be a few fricked up sick individuals who like to rape women. Sexual assault awareness classes and blaming all men are not going to change that.

I hated them when they had enough influence shut down the two for one happy hours at every bar in the USA. I was a young professional on the prowl and it meant I had to pay the full price for drinks.
I never got a DWI and never killed anyone in an accident. Why did my every-day-after-work drinking cost have to go up?
That is really the only thing I've ever known about MADD. I can only assume it's a bunch of women that would reenact prohibition if we let them.

They are targeting the first time offenders instead of the repeat offenders because there is more money to be made there for everyone
