re: What is the one thing you wanted most as a child, but parents refused?

As a kid I wanted the Tyco Hovercraft for my birthday. I was obsessed with the thing. The day before my birthday, my mom told me that they weren't getting it for me because my dad read in Consumer Reports that it was not a well made toy. I was soooo pissed.
As a Gen Xer, my parents paid very little attention to me and my sister. We were loved, of course, but we were kind of left to do our own thing most of the time. They normally didn't care what I asked for as presents; they would get it as long as it wasn't ridiculously expensive (I'm looking at you GI Joe Aircraft Carrier).
I don't know why they chose that present to finally decide to pay attention to what I was playing with.

Probably the NES (Nintendo), my parents said that we already had an Atari. I played the NES a lot at different friends' houses since nearly everyone I knew had one.
I was thinking recently that I'd like to finally get the NES and play some of those old games.

This.
The kids next door had one and my parents forbid me from riding it. They just knew I'd kill myself.
Looking back at how reckless I was, they were probably right.

Looking back I was probably kind of spoiled. I got almost everything I wanted for either Christmas or my birthday. I never asked for anything ridiculous though like a dirk bike or 4 wheeler.
The one thing I really wanted that I never got was a Freestyle BMX bike with a gyro and pegs like those dyno comp. Mom wasn't having it. Said I would end up in the hospital. Still ended up in the hospital on a bike without all that crap.

The talkboy from home alone 2
At one point I wanted a personalized wood bat from the Louisville Slugger Museum, my Dad said no. He felt bad about not getting it for years and got me one for Christmas a few years back. Very thoughtful, and I didn’t realize how it stuck with him that he didn’t get that for me at the time (due to the cost).

I think I speak on behalf of everyone who had one that that was the most disappointing toy of all time. Was nowhere close to as good as in the movie.

Air Jordan’s. I was in middle school when the Jordan IV came out and I wanted them very badly, same with every successive release. Shoe culture really started hitting around that time (Jordan’s, Pumps, those sorry arse British Knights, etc.). As a tween boy during that time, your kicks were very important in the social construct of middle school.
My parents were not exactly swimming in dough so the idea of paying $100, in the late 80s, for a pair of shoes was not exactly realistic.

I was a teenager, but I didn't want them to die when they did.

Parachute pants. In retrospect, I’m glad mom said no!

I wanted an official Red Ryder carbine action 200-range-shot model air rifle.

My parents were weird as hell. I had a trampoline, motorcycle and even belonged in a quarter midget racing club, yet I had a stupid arse bike that he bought at a flea market.
The thing I wanted most were Nike shoes when they first came out in 1979.

It isn't complete. I have almost a complete Rolling Thunder which was my absolute favorite. I believe I am only missing a few missiles and a side door. I wanted to sell all of my GI Joe but everybody was dicking me around with very low offers
