They need to ramp up their recruiting of tech companies, they were able to lure three to the city just a few years ago

LUSFiber has a lot to do with that. They just received an award for being the best service of that kind in the country.

we have JBE trying to run companies out of the state as he tries to raise taxes, take down statues, and now is trying to collect back taxes on internet purchases you made from companies not even in this state.

its not very good for jobs, but there are some out there if you have the right training and skills, especially better odds if you are skilled in a trade

We want to diversify. Those companies straight up don’t want to come here due to our atrocious road infrastructure, deplorable public schools, insane crime rate, idiotic tax structure, corrupt good ol’ boy network shakedowns, and lack of skilled workers who can pass a drug test.

Competitive pay? Reason I ask is cuz I am wondering if cost of living in the south is worth exploring. Would love to live in New Orleans

Overall, the cost of living throughout the South is lower than say the Est and West Coasts. As to Louisiana, the housing prices in South Louisiana in the NOLA, BR and Laf markets are high as compared to the rest of the state and other places in the South like Memphis, Nashville, Birmingham and even Texas. Sales taxes are approaching 10%. Food prices are a bit higher comparatively. In the NOLA area, if you are renting, get ready to pay a stupid amount

Also, on the pay end ..... unless you are a professional (Dr, Atty or RN or NP) get ready to accept about 10-15% less on average than other places of comparable population, etc for salary or comparable pay

B-bbbttttt.......the culcha!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, South Louisiana doesn’t pay well at all for nurses and IT. They pay their engineers and oil field baws pretty well (if they can get the job).

Lafayette or the state's economy look like in five years?

Methville......I know people from Lafayette will say otherwise and that they have "diversified" but that town's economy really does rise and set with the oil industry. If for some reason you go here get in with an oil services firm, if they lay you off due to market conditions.....have a plan B you can move to fast because after you have worked in that industry, there, other types will not hire you for any type of pay close to what you were making.....if at all

Actually, quite the opposite. Most of our college grads leave and move to Texas because there’s such little white collar opportunity here for college grads

Most of the "white collar" types move out of Louisiana because of shame and because splash is pretty much the only bar for them in Louisiana

Most are moving to TX for higher wages and lower cost of living.

The scraps that TX is leaving behind, FL governor is making a trip to Louisiana to urge a few more companies to move to Florida

IT

I've found salaries competitive for my sub-specialty of IT, I "work" outside of Louisiana for purposes other than salary.

Mine too. I've been offered a few out of state jobs over the years and they weren't much more than I was already making

This.

What Louisiana never recovered from was the 80's oil crunch.

80's oil crunch.
I think that happened in the Carter years - 1976-80. And the Port of New Orleans tanked around that time. It’s when NOLA became non-compet with Houston and Atlanta and they zoomed impossibly ahead. Third decline factor was always political corruption and Byzantine, in-bred business practices.

Cane's HQ moved to DFW and Smoothie King is moving corporate to DFW. It's a damn shame that companies that started in Louisiana are leaving it behind

There are 54 Fortune 500 companies in Texas and 2 Fortune 500 companies in Louisiana. Texas has way better opportunities and anyone who can't see that is either naive or a loyalist.
