Growing up in the Bay Area I heard my dad refer to the hippies in SF as tree huggers and granolas. Beaners and wetbacks for Mexicans. Some times trashy white people were called okies because apparently they came from Oklahoma after the dust bowl.

Cairo IL is the saddest place to drive through.
If you want to see something really sad then drive down Washington Ave. Old mansions and what were once very nice homes are crumbling. I have a friend who sold her mother's house in Cairo. It is a nice house built around 1960 or so. She got 30 grand for it.

I believe the literal meaning is ‘fool.’

Friends in western North Carolina use "Floridian" a lot.

Native Floridians are called crackers. They don't seem to mind. Most are underweight fishermen who look a little methy.

Correct. Others (although not as common) are FISHTAB's- "F***kin Illinois Shithead Towing A Boat" and "flatlander".

I worked for a native health consortium in juneau for 2 years and remember them using the word frequently but didnt get the sense that it was offensive.. a few of em told me that white people are the ones who decided the word was offensive.. kind of like indian

Bakersfield was a popular stopping point for Oklahoman's who migrated to California at that time.
Link to a story about the history of Okies in California.

Okie
Never heard this as bad inside the state, Okie from Muskogee s a great song. Very political though.
Forgot to mention this earlier: Merle Haggard, who wrote and performed the song, was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA, which is where a lot of Okies settled after they migrated there. He died in CA, too.
As far as I know, he never lived in Oklahoma. His father was from somewhere near Muskogee, and he wrote the song from the perspective of his father. But he was a Californian.

My FIL was from Crowley. He called me Cooyan until the day he died. Loved that dude and sure miss him.

I dated a guy who grew up there. Parents were divorced. Went with him to see his dad and his stepmother had black teeth.
Never been back.

I know quite a few Italians and they seem to be OK with Dago but get a bit riled if called a "Wop".
Hell, they even went as far as to get the famous "Wop Salad" cancelled and renamed to "Italian Salad".
LOL... Yeah, it meant "without papers". They were fresh off the boat from Italy.
The Italians I'm around a lot are the whiniest little bitches in the world that cry about the smallest little things. You would think the men were women.
