Sweet. They can lower my taxes. (I pay quite a bit as well)

Lowering the water level will cause the banks to slough off. Are you also planning on putting up bulkheads as well?

The deal?

You cannot steal money without spending money. And you cannot get re-elected if you spend money on things people disapprove of.

Therefore the cause is good and the pickings are better!

Like I said, I’m not an engineer. Maybe it’s not feasible.

But BREC could lower their millages and still make out well.
They won’t though.

LSU University Lakes rank top 10 for the most toxic algal blooms

quote:

"When there is a cyanobacteria bloom, it is very unsafe,” said Lucia Ross, the chief marketing officer for BlueGreen Water Technologies.

“And it’s not only unsafe to be in the water, but around the water, because it is airborne.” Ross said the bacteria is airborne when you can smell the stench of rotting green slime. Breathing it in can affect your lungs, throat and eyes, and getting into the water itself can cause a rash.

“Animals and small children have died from being in contact,” said Ross.

Plan isn't working. The desk jockies running this need to RESIGN. How many hundreds of thousands, if not millions have been spent on this EMBARRASSMENT.

Too many brother in law deals, paper pushers collecting salary and those sweet, sweet government benefits. Baton Rouge government and their "independent" contractors are crooked as a question mark.

They haven't started yet. Google search says the development to dredge the lakes (and use the fill material) just went to public notice this month with the Army Corps.

That’s one reason it’s a bad plan. Years and years and untold fortunes already spent. Nothing to show for it but making the top 10 list for most toxic lake algae in the world.

The overflow on university lake into the creek off Stanford was lowered below previous levels within the last two years. The amount of rainfall has no effect on the depth now as it all runs out.

There were large bass back in the day in that lake.

If you launch at the gravel launch by the interstate East bound off ramp, go straight to the middle, and there were stumps right under the water.

We would launch an 16ft aluminum boat with only a trollmotor on it. Easy to load back on the trailer as the launch was gravel back then.

A few trips I caught more than one bass over 4lbs at night. Rebel broken back minnow would mimick the shad against the stumps.

If you go back and read old news articles they “hoped” to start with the lake construction in 2021. So we got typical overselling and underperforming by every single Baton Rouge elected official.

It’s very similar to the MoveBr plan and the light synchronization. Your boy Fred Raiford and Mayor Broome said back in 2018 that this was the first thing we would see from the new taxes started in April of 2019. 4 years later we are still waiting. That’s how they sell this crap to us. The light synchronization was supposed to be completed within 9-10 months. There’s zero accountability in local government.

BR is doomed with the leaders, both elected and unelected, who are stealing everybody’s money and lying to everybody. The only pockets getting fatter are the lobbyists, elected officials, and their cronies.

Keep voting for Broome and BR will be worse than New Orleans by the time she’s out of office.

Do you know this for a fact or is this just a typical “fire everybody” talking-out-of-arse rant?

Because from what I’ve been reading for the past 5+ years, they were working to secure funding for a long time. Now they finally have the funding to actually execute the project.

They are not going to lower the level in the lake so it offers zero improvement with regards to flood protection.

The Louisiana Watershed Initiative is contributing $10 million to Phase 1 of the project through CDBG-MIT funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The project will increase the storm water retention capacity of the lakes and reduce flood levels in surrounding areas during rain events.

Might as well lower it to as low as possible and and cheaply remove the fill vs dredge and filter out solids

They need to dredge 3/4 of it to a depth of 8 ft. Use the fill to build some kickass beaches along sorority row. Build a marina/launch area at BR beach and lets get the LSU Waterski team to #1 in the nation while enjoying summer weekend drag boat racing!

Seriously, some beach access along sorority row utilizing the proposed dredged fill area and a kayak/canoe/skull facility at BR beach for an LSU rowing team would be a great addition.

If these were your lakes, and you were paying people to restore them, would you keep paying them if all they had to show for it was one of the world's worst rankings in toxic algae blooms and a 6 figure underwhelming website?

Anyway, the cost of the project has been increasing for years:

This was written in 2018
quote:

The proposals to improve the lakes have been stop-and-go for more than 10 years as city-parish leaders and state officials worked to align all the moving parts to push the project forward — like getting approval from the Army Corps of Engineers and preliminary planning funding from the state. BRAF has previously pinned the total costs for dredging all six lakes around $25 million.

Written in 2017

quote:

The entire project has had estimated costs ranging from $80 million to $100 million.

Money was secured as early as 2019:

quote:

State and local leaders announced Wednesday they had “cobbled together” nearly $50 million in funds to revitalize the six long-neglected lakes near LSU and City Park.

quote:

The project will also rely on RESTORE Act funds from the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, as well as dollars from Community Funding Block Grants.

LINK

In 2020, money was reported to be locked up:
quote:

LSU Foundation CEO Robert Stuart said funding is in place to move forward with the design of the lakes’ rehabilitation by the end of 2020.

“We’re very confident that we’ll have a good design team coming in to do the dredging,” Stuart said.

“The lakes are a really important part of the quality of life at LSU and Baton Rouge. People from all walks of life use them, and we think we can make it a showcase that will be much more useable” Stuart said project partners hope to engage students from various sciences to learn from the project.

After the design team finishes the lakes’ revamp, Phase I of construction, scheduled to start in fall 2021, will include the deepening and reshaping of City Park, Erie, Campus and College Lakes along with the creation of pedestrian and bicycle path renovations around City Park and Campus Lakes. The three sources of funding from Baton Rouge Parish, BREC and the Louisiana Office of Community Development, combine for a budget of $15 million for Phase I.

These were found in a few minutes of googling. I quit following the reports on this years ago. Because nothing ever happens. Budgets keep increasing. Some funding is secured and spent. No real progress is made. Nothing but the common refrain of we have a plan and we need more money.

Equipment and labor need to be hired. Hell, LSU students could do some of the work for class credit.
