I’ve always liked the DC-3. Aeronautic icon.

And just for something different...Grumman HU-16 Albatross. Most probably think it’s ugly bc it isn’t sleek or fast, but I’ve always loved these.

I don’t know much about the technical side of those planes, but it says that it was a Packard engine not a Rolls-Royce.

It was POS with the Packard, it become a monster when they put the supercharged Rolls in it and fitted it with drop tanks.

It took a long time for the F15 to come up.

That's a beautiful workhorse

No, it was the Allison engine that didn't have the supercharger capability.

America really has produced some beautiful, deadly, effective planes. Personally, I’m partial to the late 3rd to early 4th Gens (Intruder, Phantom, Tomcat, Eagle, Hornet, Falcon). Right before the turn of the stealth era, it took precision flying, quick thinking, and skill to stay alive, and air-to-air combat was done and over in under a minute after tally-ho (sometimes even before that if you happen to be in a Tomcat with a Phoenix on the rail). With the development of the amazing Migs, American pilots weren’t the fastest things in the sky and had to rely on sheer skillful piloting and a good RIO to stay alive... especially Crusader and Phantom pilots had to have nerves of steel.

The F-8 Crusader was more than a match for any mig during that time period. The last true gunfighter.

As a kid, we lived on Kaneohe MCAS in Hawaii. Our house was on a hill overlooking the base airport. The kids used to sit out back and watch F-8 Crusaders come in and land.

It got above the tree line, when nose up and just hauled ads. Gone in seconds.

Years ago, I was in the high desert out in west Texas and saw one. It was unlike any plane I'd ever seen to that point. Two absolutely gigantic jet engines on that bird. The pilot suddenly took the Sled into high acceleration. It was amazing. Gone in seconds is exactly how I have described it for years.
I saw the one on the flight deck of the Intrepid in New York Harbor. Even more amazing when looking at it up close.

Same, there...the P-51 and the P-38 are the pinnacle of beauty in airplane design.

Dogfights on the Military Channel is the best show on second tier cable.

Have to go with the Mustang.

I'll respectfully disagree with your post. I have to believe the time period before the primary weapon of a fighter became A to A missiles (say about the early-70s), required not only pilot skill and training, but a through understanding of the capabilities of your aircraft, the capabilities your opponents aircraft and the tacits to defeat that aircraft.

In WW2, we captured a Zero, reverse engineered it and discovered that at certain ascent or decent angles, the carburetor would choke out reducing speed and horsepower. IIRC, the Mustang was designed for pilots to have the HP to press the Zero into those angle of accent and history proved the result was a strong advantage in combat.

Early jet propulsion dog-fighting, Mustang vs. ME-262, and Sabre & F-4 vs. Mig is balls-out, nerves of steel.

Q: what is the third plane? Are those flying tigers?
