I always hear people say something like "i'm not religious, but i am spiritual."

is this just some unique snowflake stuff?

No,

People do feel connections deep connections that they don’t understand, but unlike religious people, they don’t feel a need to explain it away

It involves bringing your consciousness out of your emotional mind.

It means atheist or agnostic, but it's a watered down way to say it so that Christians won't overreact.

More like atheist or agnostic but unable to cope with their nihilistic worldview and overall meaningless existence.

Partly.

It's an acknowledgement that someone thinks there is a higher something, or a spirit world of some sort, or deeper connection to nature, etc.

For some people this can be a starting point to approach some sort of self-work. Even if that means leaving the confines of the religion they grew up with to practice yoga, etc.

For others, it is a way of defining that they believe in something higher... but that they have a disdain for organized religion. Therefore, they refuse to follow any established path (and pretty much any path will have some degree of organization & calls on some form of fellowship or trusting established ideas). Thus, out of pride, they choose to do nothing.

People use it to mean so many things that it is now meaningless.

Depends on who’s saying it. It means anywhere from “I like the idea of organized religion but not actually putting the effort into being a true follower” to “I’m agnostic”.

As someone that went back and forth, no it's not. When you pray, you're escaping your worldly emotional mind and looking for peace and comfort. Someone does not have to follow a religion to do this. I'm not putting down religion, because I am, but spirituality can mean you just practice escaping your worldly mind regularly, not concentrating on thoughts/emotions.

It's when you think deeply about the 21 year old who has died from the flu but don't pray for him after he's dead.

I’m not exactly atheist, but this argument is so tired. Plenty of atheists find meaning in their lives without belief in a Creator. You can also have morality without religion.

There is plenty of beauty in the universe to enjoy your part in it.
