re: what is "spirituality"?

They believe in God but don't want to be told what they can and can't do.

Pretty much. Actually it's pretty much an excuse for not practicing any form of organized religion. Religion involves congregating (gathering) with others who worship some form of deity(s). The worship includes adhering to a set of values, beliefs and ritual. To "congregate" with religious people requires the person accept, comply, conform their lives to the values and beliefs of THE congregation. They signify their conformity by gathering for ritual or "worship". Some folks just don't want to be tied down to a specific set of values or beliefs. Way too restricting. They will (and do) acknowledge the spiritual aspect of their existence. Most likely they've were introduced to "formal religious" practices in their youth but dropped out in college or just wandered off. But they do recognize by their acceptance of spirituality that actions flow from some sort of internal mechanism. Without specifically stating it they accept the traditional notion that man is both flesh (body) and spirit (soul).

I could go on, but you get the picture. Basically folks who say this kind of baloney just want to pleasure without someone binding them to a set of standards that restrict their so-called "freedom of expression". The reality is we live in a culture of materialism. The ability to pleasure has been lifted to the point of worship (religion) in our materialistic culture. So for the person who gives lip service to spirituality, but rejects formal religious practices, IMO it's just a form of rebellion.

I mean if you are a "religious" person I suppose you could search scripture for examples of this rebellion. You would not need to look far. The parable of the Prodical Son as described in Luke 15:11-32 describes that rebellion perfectly.
