When I was a kid growing up a Catholic we couldn’t eat meat any Friday all year long.If you did it was a mortal sin and if you died without going to confession you went to hell.
A time or two I forgot and was scared shitless I was going to die before I could get to confession.
Later on they changed it to only Fridays during Lent.I always wondered if those that went to hell for eating meat got out when they changed the rules.( I don’t really believe anyone went to hell for eating meat on Friday)
One of the things that turned me away from Catholicism.Keep changing the rules.

Keep changing the rules.

Although Friday abstinence remains the law of the Latin Church, many national bishops’ conferences — including the U.S. bishops — make exceptions in their jurisdictions, permitting Catholics to choose another form of penance instead.

And why do folks have a huge blow out crawfish boil on Good Friday ?
because they don't follow the fasting part of Good Friday

There are such people as Catholic in Name Only...you know the ones that just go to Mass on Christmas and Easter. That take communion even though they haven't been to confession in ages.

believe, back in Rome, the fishermen were hurting, and asked the pope for help, thus creating a time period for the fishermen and their catch to be at a huge demand.
This is the reason. Purely economic. The church let the Irish have corn beef on a Friday a few years ago on St Patty’s Day. I suspect they’ll grant the waiver again this year .

Meat" when it comes to beef, pork, and chicken is the muscle of those animals.
If not meat what exactly is the flesh of fish considered?

I call them "Twice-A-Year Catholics"

Something about the Pope making a deal with fisherman back in the day. No meat on Fridays during lent means more money in Fishermans pocket means more money in church collection plate.
Heard this too. Was going to post it. I can’t remember where it was from.

Just a Catholic tradition to remind you of the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross to save his believers' souls.
Clear
Brings up 2 questions I have always had (for post for another day)
Were all Earth inhabitants intended to be believers of Jesus? Seems like no as impossible limitations of geography, Mobility, language, and forces suggest God’s plan included some and excluded many by nature of limitations.
Saving souls…which souls, just those non believers at the time, all preceding or forthcoming? In my life experience so far, God seems far less symbolic than what is portrayed here.

Winn Dixie was robbed by a dude named Judas, so no meat was available that Thursday night.

Surprised no one has offered up the big question!!
Are froglegs and alligator fish or meat?
Some people make this a lot more difficult than it has to be, it's very simple.
Abstinence is not eating the flesh of any warm-blooded creature (mammals/birds). You CAN eat cold-blooded creatures (fish, seafood, reptiles, amphibians).

There is something very organic and bodily about this practice that affects people in emotional and spiritual ways that can’t be easily explained.
By switching from steak to fish on Fridays?
Answering the OP, people are missing the point of Lent entirely.
Lent is a time of preparation. As Jesus prepared himself in the desert for 40 days, Lent is a time for Christians to prepare ourselves. How can we be better Christians? How can we connect more with the sacrifice of Jesus.
One of the biggest answers is to mentally prepare ourselves with the analogy of the desert (give up things that we covet to help center and focus on our spiritual relationship). Food. Technology. Alcohol. Caffeine. Other vices.
Lent is also 47 days. I've always wondered why Christians throw around "40 days of Lent" so casually. For anyone who has sacrificed a lot, we can probably count the hours.
And for the record...you don't have to be Christian to understand the concept of cutting out significant parts of our daily lives to help refocus on what is important in this life.
New Years is a time for rebirth and commitments to self improvement. Lent and the Easter season is much the same but with a 47 day focus on how to improve. There is something satisfying about being disciplined. There is something satisfying about eliminating a lot of the unnecessary noise in life... even if it is for over a month and a half.

Does it derive from Jewish law?
Probably, as Jesus was jewish and most of Christianity faith is taken from the Jewish faith it's predecessor.

Does this sound like any religion you know?
1 Timothy 4:1
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,
3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth

it used to be a fast day, not a seafood platter day.

Despite being Lutheran I picked the better school and went to a catholic school. I don't eat fish and that was the only thing they served on Fridays. So 5 Fridays out of the year my mom would drop off a couple of cheeseburgers. I was told by some that I was going to hell.
