Humor is in the eyes of the beholder. What I might think is funny, others might not.

Yeah, you and the OP have it right. It's definitely unexpected.

I was bending over making baby talk to a 3 mo old in a high chair. I didn't know my brother was right behind me with a rolled up newspaper. He hits me upside the head. WAAAAP! The baby is busting a gut with giggles. At, that moment, I realized the 3 Stooges' tragedy humor had universal appeal.

But it does make me wonder about comedy in tragedy. A man can fall off a ladder and break his neck and it can be an unexpected event that makes you feel sick to your stomach witnessing it. Yet somebody else can unexpectedly fall off a ladder and land on his butt as the ladder falls and hits him on the head, and some people are laughing hysterically. ???

Good point. Maybe you have to add in a bit of relief and faith that things are fine.

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a post of yours that was even remotely funny.

Mel Brooks said

Tragedy is when I get a paper cut under one of my fingernails and it hurts so bad and I just can't stand it...

Comedy is when we're walking down the street together and you accidentally fall into an open lid down a manhole and land in the sewer.

If men laugh and women look confused or disgusted, then it is funny

there are three theories of humor

quote:
Relief theory maintains that laughter is a homeostatic mechanism by which psychological tension is reduced.[2][3][7] Humor may thus for example serve to facilitate relief of the tension caused by one's fears

quote:
The superiority theory of humor traces back to Plato and Aristotle, and Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan. The general idea is that a person laughs about misfortunes of others (so called schadenfreude), because these misfortunes assert the person's superiority on the background of shortcomings of others.[

quote:
The incongruity theory states that humor is perceived at the moment of realization of incongruity between a concept involved in a certain situation and the real objects thought to be in some relation to the concept.[10]
