It appears to attack two specific sets of cells in the lungs: goblet cells and ciliated cells.
The goblet cells produce a mucus that makes a wet, slimy layer on your respiratory tract (that's important in feeling your lungs moist and healthy).
The ciliated cells are cells that have little hairs on them that wave in an upward direction so that any nasty material that gets stck in the mucus (such as bacteria or a virus particles of dust, etc) get swept up towards your throat and you cough it out or cough and swallow it (dumping it into the acid of your stomach).
COVID-19 kills these cells. As it kills them (as part of its replication process) the dead tissue falls into the lungs and will eventually lead to blockages, if not addressed quickly. These blockages can lead to pneumonia.
But wait, there's more!
What happens when your body reacts to it is sort of an over-attack (called "hyperimmune"). This becomes a problem as the over-attack can cause damage and inflammation in the lungs which can make breathing even more difficult (in other words, your body's attempt to fight it off can compound the negative impacts of the virus).
Heavy smokers/vapers and those who are susceptible to respiratory issues are especially vulnerable because of this (as are those with already-compromised immune systems).

This whole thing is an overreaction. Only 80,000 people infected in China where they have 1.4 billion people that live there. The world is going to end people will get all pissy and mad but screw them I’m sick of all this doom and gloom. It’s simple wash your hands and practice good hygiene. Also when shopping stock up on more things than usual just in case. Damnit people life is short go out and grab a beer.

You sound like someone who thinks this won’t impact them at all directly.
I think you would have a different outlook if you were in the midst of the outbreak zone. The virus strain is mutating (moving target for cure).

I do sound like someone who thinks this virus won’t impact them directly because the likely good of it impacting me directly is pretty low. I’m a realist and don’t live my life worrying about something that I can’t stop. All we can do is have precautions and hope we don’t come in contact with this virus. I also believe the more it spread the weaker it gets.

Pneumonia...”best friend of the elderly”....death comes fast and typically pain free in the scheme of what else kills old people.
