If the first baseman drops a ball, but the ball beat the runner, should he still be out? It's the same principle. The pitcher gets an assist, and the catch gets the put out. You have to do it or pitchers and catchers will essentially have no defensive stats.

I think 99% of people would have caved just like he did.
Not because it's right, but because of the immense pressure at the time, and this was before people were really aware of cancel culture and how to deal with it.
