Diving boards at home swimming pools are not for diving. They're for jumping off to make awesome catches of the football your buddy at the other end of the pool is throwing.

If you get a spring board then 9' should be the minimum. Otherwise your kids may end up with a head/neck injury. Our was 9' growing up and I still hit my head if I wasn't careful.

We have 20x40 goes from 3.5' to 6' which means when the water is at the appropriate level for the skimmer it is around 3' to 5.5' deep.
I think the 3' is a bit shallow for swimming laps, but it is perfect for my kids who are still learning to swim.
I like the idea of a sports pool where the depth is 4' to 5.5' and has a rectangular shape.

That honestly sounds boring as hell. It's like swimming at a hotel pool. Isn't the sport called swimming and diving?

I love my 9', takes my breathe away every time I get in as it stays cold due to shade and depth. Neighbor has a 5.5 and it feels like a warm bath when you get it.

To each there own. At my age, I could care less about diving. I would rather have a pool that is suitable for the activities that I enjoy such as basketball, volleyball, swimming laps or hanging out.

The company that built mine told me if you go greater than 6', everyone will hang out in the shallow end. Opted out of diving board so we went from 3' to 5.5'. Kids loved it and so did adults.

Seriously what do kids do in a pool with no diving board? You can't do trick jump shots into the basketball hoop, you can't play how far away can I put the tube and still make it through without touching it, you can't play splash, you can't do any tricks, you can't shoot the guy in the air with nerf guns/water balloons. Do you just wade around in the shallow end?

It depends on the age of the kids. My kids are ages six and under so they are still just learning how to swim.
They are not of age where they could do many of the activities that you described. I would imagine as they get older they will do many of the same activities that you mentioned only jumping into the pool from the side of the pool rather than a diving board. Or they will get creative and find other games to keep themselves entertained.

If you hook up fountains to the return jets it will keep the 5.5' pool cool.
