Why are they better
Dry fast. Even when soaking wet from rain still have good feel. Never got a blister hiking in them. Good on multi day backpacking trips and wearing every day for a week.
Not cheap. If I had enough pairs I would only wear these.

I can vouch for Darn Tough and WigWam. Both are durable as hell. Darn Tough is my go-to. Ugly as a mud fence, but excellent.
Smartwool is a little cheaper, but not quite up to the other two.

Darn Tough's Mountaineering series is their thickest I do believe, and if you order at the right times you can get them 15-20% to come out at around 22$ a pop. Even full price they are still worth it, as I just got a new pair in and worn them in 11F wind chill weather and no cold feet at all.

Darn Tough is hard to beat.
Smart wool is a great buy.
I live in the mountains and these 2 pairs make up most of my pairs.
A new pair I really like is the REI Co-op medium weight.
Finally, if you are strapped for cash, God honest, the Costco wool socks are pretty awesome for the $$.
Do not buy boots 2 sizes larger. Blister city.

Glad I listened. Ordered some Darn Tough off of Amazon and got them end of last week JUST in time for this cold snap. You weren't kidding about them.

Came to post Darn Tough as well. I went to REI in Sept to buy some SmartWool socks for an upcoming 4 day trek and the girl steered me toward Darn Tough based on member feedback. The wicking properties are excellent, elastic seems to hold up so far, and no weird seams that get bunched up in your boot.

I like Smartwool and have about 12 pairs, but they all seem to blow out at the heel after around 1 year. Slowly replacing them with Darn Tough, so far they seem much more resilient and have an unconditional lifetime guarantee
