What if the Cuban/Soviet Missile launch was actually carried out?

Probably the closest call the U.S. has ever had.
What if those 40 or so missiles haven't been detected by surveillance? How much potential damage could that have caused in the U.S. back then (1960s)? It's never been known (I don't think) which specific areas were targeted, but it's safe to assume it largely consisted of major cities.

Then we'd have had a full response and nuclear apocalypse.

Either you wouldn't be born, or the radiation would frick you up so bad you'd have orange hair, 7 fingers, and 6 balls to go along with your leukemia.

If, ifs and buts were candy and nuts it would be Christmas everyday!

Cuba would've been "glassed"
I doubt it would escalate into a full war with the US and USSR though.

Did Russia have thermonuclear weapons yet or were they A-bombs?

Nevermind, I was thinking early 50s instead of 60s. Surely those backwards commies had stolen the technology by then.

A much more perplexing question is how this "eyeball to eyeball and the other side blinked first" bullshite has been basically allowed to go unchallenged for 54+ years. IT WAS THE U.S. THAT F*CKING BLINKED FIRST!
Khrushchev had requested that the U.S. remove its missiles from Turkey, only this time he brought Luca Brasi with him and assured Pres. Kennedy and the U.S. that either they remove the missiles from Turkey or their brains will be all over Turkey.
And removed they were.
You can argue the extremes that which Khrushchev was willing to go to achieve his objective, but that's for another discussion.
Khrushchev 1, Kennedy 0

This dude might've saved the world.
Vice Admiral Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov was one of three officers aboard the B-59, a Russian sub that was being depth-charged in an effort by the US Navy to surface her for identification.
Not knowing if war had already broken out or not, two of the three officers aboard had approved the launch of a Nuclear-tipped torpedo, but Russian Navy protocol required the approval of all three, and Arkhipov was the lone dissenter.
He was also the Captain of the infamous K-19 later portrayed by Harrison Ford the The Widowmaker.

I wouldn't be here. My parents lived about two miles from Barksdale AFB at the time.

maybe Obama would have not lifted the travel ban to Cuba.

There have been a few others. We were pretty close during the Arab-Israeli war. In addition there have been some near-"accidents" on both sides. Usually over technical glitches or misinterpretation of data. One particular close call was during the eighties, when tensions were already high. During a military exercise, NATO issued a practice dispersal order for its top brass. The Soviets intercepted and interpreted it as a prelude to war. Fortunately cooler heads prevailed.

Almost a year before the Cuban Middle Crisis started the Soviets held a test of a thermonuclear device that resulted in the largest nuclear explosion in history. This test detonation of what we know as the "Czar Bomb" had a yield of over 50 megatons.
For comparative purposes, the largest device the US ever tested yielded 15 megatons.
So yes, the Soviets did have thermonuclear weapons during the Cuban Middle crisis.
