Are there actually people who drop a pet off at the vet’s office and do not stay with the pet during the euthanasia process?
Yes. I hear it is more commmon than you think.

The least a person can do is comfort one’s pet during his final moments on earth. Sure, it is hard to watch a pet die, but it would be harder to imagine him dying alone.

Hard isn't the word. It is awful.

My wife was beside him where he could see her, and she was telling him how much she loved him. I was giving him one of the neck rubs that he loved so much.

I remember asking the vet, "is he gone" and she answered very softly, "yes".

The hardest part was he died with his eyes open. I closed them for him and that was when my wife had to leave the room.

For many years we have went to this vet. There are candles at the front desk. There is a sign that says, "If these candles are lit. Please be quiet and respectful. This means someone is saying goodbye to their beloved pet."

When we came out those candles were lit. This time they were for us. That hurt.

Last one I had to put down, the vet was going to send her body to the vet school for research.

My two labs were both cremated by Heaven's Pets and their ashes are in a box on a shelf in my office.

Take it home and bury it. Let it be part of the dirt in your yard.

I was told if there were no instructions for burial or cremation they would be put in the landfill.

Neither.

My veterinarian recently put two of my dogs to sleep forever. Molly today-who we just finished burying her at home a few hours ago and Trixie, also put to sleep forever by my veterinarian about three weeks ago who we also buried that same day at home.

We’ve never dealt with dead pets any other way. And I’ve always been with them when they’re killed.

In the past I have brought mine home and buried them in the yard

That just feels right to me. I'm gonna bring my dog home one way or the other, it's where he/she belongs and where I'd like to think they'd want to be

If you can't be there for them then you shouldn't have a pet

They have always been there for me, it is incredibly difficult, but I will be there for them

If I buy a home with a pet cemetery the first thing I do is throw away all of the burial markers.

You're right about this. And I'm no admin nor do I RA posts. I just don't like when genuine threads go to shite because of a personal beef between posters. I simply plead with you experienced OTers to take the high road and keep the personal attacks/bickering to a minimum in genuine subject-oriented threads that appeal to the OT masses.
We can all get along. I promise.
The admins here will run over the top of each other to ban someone who is not worshipping at the alter of the exalted ones.

However, they will completely ignore trolls like greenshitstain. My family, including my children, have been cursed and insulted here. Things these cowardly trolls would never say out from in behind that keyboard. No action taken. Say something less than glowing about a POC thug who stomps a 90 year old woman and you get banned quick.

I usually handle the trolls myself. I have no problem with that. I don't report. I have hit the RA button once in 17 years here. Let's be honest. That greenshitstain character is a teenager.
