What happens if you pay on a credit card that has no balance?

I paid off a credit card, and haven’t used it in months because BBVA sucks. It has $0 balance.
I just realized I submitted like a $500 payment to that card two days ago instead of my other card that I actually need to pay off. So what happens to my $500?

You'll likely have a $500 credit balance if they accept it. You can just put normal expenses on it until the $500 is gone.

Perhaps calling them would solve that worry? I'm sure they would transfer that payment though to the other account.

Most cards let you pay up to 10% over your limit without issue. Anything over that is a crapshoot as to whether or not the'll allow the payment - this has something to do with preventing people from subverting their limits, or so I've been told.

If you still don't use the card for a very long time, they will send you a check to zero out the balance.
Leave it and see if it'll play games with your credit score.

I’ve done that before and they’ve sent a check to me for the same amount.

Carrying a balance of more than $350 is trashy af

To consolidate what has already been posted based on my experience years ago: they will leave it as a positive balance for a few months, letting you charge against it if you'd like. If you still have a balance after said few months, they will mail you a check.

They’ll either credit the account or reject the payment and refund you.

You'll have a negative balance. Think of it as forward paying.
