We spend most of the time talking deer hunting, fishing, cooking, fricking, drinking, and cussing out contractors wanting a safe work/hot work permit.

A dude who sits behind the console making sure the plant doesn't blow up. When shite is going downhill, he calls someone to fix it.

If he's not working console, he's probably doing a lot of chillin

What kind of education do you need for that? An 8th grade graduation certificate?

Plant operators are the guys that sometimes watch the real plant workers (that would be the third party contractors) get work done. The only thing plant operators need to do is be timely with permits and then leave for their little control room so they can talk shite about us until it's time to turn those permits back in.

Fairly good explaination but you forgot the foremost resposiblilty. They make sure to waste as many contractor hours as possible before issuing work permits. Some are more discreet about stalling, others DGAF and blatantly do other unimportant shite in front of you just because he can and you can't say shite about it. All the while dollar signs are rolling through my head, because he thinks I'm on a hard money job, when in reality I'm on T&M.

I've walked into control rooms for a permit signature from operators that I knew all my life (several lived on the same street I grew up on and I played ball with their kids) and they looked at me like they'd never seen me before in their lives.

The disdain for contractors is palpable

Another "opuhraytuh" duty is to make sure area nurses and hairdressers have husbands.

You need to be able and willing to cook Gumbo and Jambalaya. Occasionally supply and cook a deer roast. (see Episode 9 & 10 of "Refined")

Well I am sure that there are many operators who have earned the negative reputation that precedes them. However, I would think or at least like to think that like most other businesses there are just as many that do their job very well and make up for those that don't. Rarely have I seen a job held up just because an operator is choosing to be an a-hole. In my experience, Most of the time where jobs have been held up it has been because of an uncertainty over whether the job has been adequately prepared or if everything has been done to meet the stringent company/psm/Osha regulations to ensure the safety of the workers. A lack of proper planning and communication is another contributing factor.

Pretty accurate, but this phases doesn't kick in until about year 10 or year 15 on the job.

I'm thinking about using my Post 9/11 GI Bill to go to get the PTEC degree. Any recommendations?

What exactly is a plant “operator”?
You know, the ones that all the OT baws aspire to be. I’ve googled it but still can’t make heads or tails about what an operator is or does. Please enlighten me and the other white collars. Are they the ones that like push buttons to start machines or pumps or something like that? I really do not know.

Does he get dirty like the others? Does he get to wear those plant boots? Or is there something in his attire that distinguishes him from the other low rungs?

Would he be higher up than, say, Bud‘s uncle in urban cowboy? Is he likely to own a suit? Is he likely to wear a suit to a wedding or funeral?

Also.

Unless you have a relative working in said plant you probably should even be wasting your time asking about this.

You can tell by the replies in this topic who the operators are, and who the lowly contractors are.
