I never go back to that store. Telling me that she never heard of 65 year old people using flavored sex lubricants before was entirely inappropriate .... especially with 4 people in line behind me that could hear..

And most people in here love to complain about rude Yankees. Sounds like we have plenty of them in this thread.

Some of you guys are some miserable fricks, Im very friendly with the ole broads that checkout in dorignacs, it's called being a polite human being
Yea, engage and humor them for the 28 seconds. I was at dorignacs buying a couple bottles of nicer wine for Thanksgiving and the woman was going on about the price. I tried to convince her it was good stuff, and finally I said "if you play your cards right, young lady, my next purchase my be for the two of us"
She lost it. She was an older black woman, and it seemed like that single line made her day. Her reaction made mine.

I just dont like when they make some comment like, "oh wow, thats expensive, you sure you want this whatever?"
Its like, wtf, are you trying to talk me out of buying things?

I really like engaging in small talk and making comments myself. I would join in and bore her with one liners of when I was a cashier at Winn/Dixe as a teenager. That'll teach her....

I'm not one for small talk, but it passes the time for them and sometimes makes it less awkward than just standing in silence.
A few days ago small talk paid off for me at one store. Cashier and I were chatting and she said she had a special 20% off the whole purchase coupon she was supposed to use at her discretion for people who were buying X amount of toys or had additional online coupons or something. I only had one toy, but she gave me the 20% off anyway.
I noticed she hadn't given it to the bitchy person in front of me with a bunch of stuff either.
Just try buying large black garbage bags, duct tape, rope & bleach next time and see what kind of comments you get.

I always liked buying diapers and alcohol together.

I would have used this to my advantage. Turn to the people behind you and, if you see something you like, just state your address with a wink!

I get awkward looks when I buy a 6 pack of vaseline, a cucumber, and a spatula.

Every once in a while I'll go to Walmart and buy chocolate syrup, canned whipped cream, cheap gin in a plastic bottle, and condoms just to get the looks from the cashier.

It's always "having a party tonight?". I always say "Yes, but I don't know what they will be drinking." Buy 6 bottles of wine and some Tito's everyone wants to get judgy...

Well, they're trained to provide customer service, ask you about your shopping experience, help you find things you came in to purchase, etc.
Being annoyingly friendly is better than being rude as frick

Normally I like a little friendly banter at check out time, so it doesn't bother me. Except there was this one clerk who really annoyed me. She seemed like she would scrutinize my purchases, and then make some comment or ask a question about something I was buying. She seemed to either be compulsively nosy or else a scary sea-hag stalker kind of person. I saw her do that to other customers too; avoided her check out line.

You're an a-hole. I always chat with the cashiers and joke with them. They're miserable. It's the least I can do to liven up their day.

I appreciate the break from the usual grocery store monotony

Trashy as hell, probably more understandable in a chick since they are usually more bovine than guys.

if they do it in a positive, friendly way, then i like it + that has to be a thankless boring job, so why not give them the satisfaction of a little idle banter? have a little grace, people.
i like it when the cashier says, "Oooh, I love those." Or, "That's a great price." or makes a joke about what i'm buying (like case of TP, a carton of prunes, a 6 pack of Schlitz, a frozen pizza, and a plunger).

Bought a half pound of lump crab meat tonight to make She-Crab soup tomorrow and the middle aged female asked me "is that crab stuff good? I only saw one person buy it before and I wouldn't even know what to do with it. You just eat it out the container?" Yep, I said. Just get a spork and go at it.
