Typically A means it can flood and the following number is the number of inches you can expect in a 100 year flood event.

It's a measure of your stupidity level because you are considering buying in a flood zone.

ask for the elevation certificate and an agent can let you know what you looking at.

Other than A99, I don't think there's really any difference between the other numbered A zones. Get a copy of the elevation certificate from the seller. If the house isn't at least 2 feet above BFE, move on unless you like to live dangerously.

"A" refers to a 1% chance of annual flooding

The # behind the "A" letter indicates the BFE or base flood elevation (in feet) for that specific flood zone/parcel.

Probably that one is in an A4 flood zone and one is in an A11 flood zone.

It means your flood insurance will be high.....and your house has a higher than average possibility of flooding.

I'm not sure what the difference between the number behind the "A" designates (other than A99) but its not the BFE. There's areas in St Tammany that are designated as A4 and A11 zones but have BFE's between 30 and 40

I write flood insurance daily
It all depends on the elevation certificate and when the maps were revised
As another poster said correctly, look at the BFE (Bass flood elevation) and HAG (highest adjacent structure) and LAG (lowest adjacent structure).
Another poster said incorrectly that your premiums will be high. Not necessarily true if the home was built properly, but it also depends on the revised flood maps.
For example, if the BFE was originally 8 and the house was built to 12, you’re fine. If that same plain was remapped to 10 or 11, I may look elsewhere.

It means your 82 year old grandfather that buried a bunch of buses to form a bunker has a water problem.

Certainly for cost purposes.
But, your new purchase is more likely to flood.
