If you were to give cash, would the amount be any different?

$100 if under 5. $200 thereafter.

No way in hell I'm spending $200 on birthday gifts for them.

$50 is plenty.

No set amount, but we don't shortchange our nephews.

They are still young so they get more excited about the toys still than money.

Damn, I was thinking closer to $50. You also have to give them Christmas gifts and other holidays as well.

I just spent about $50 on my niece's birthday present. It's an art easel. She'll be 3 on Saturday. I'm sure I'll spend a crap ton more on markers, colors, paint, paint brushes and art paper over the next couple of years, though.

I dont spend $200 on my wife's birthday. Screw my nephew's.

I send him a gift at Christmas time, but nothing for birthdays.

A better question... when a nephew/niece marries into another family with stepchildren, do you have to get them presents too? My wife says yes, so now we have to buy stuff for his stepsiblings.

Sounds like around $50 seems to be the consensus. I'm giving cash because they already have enough crap and I'd rather start a college fund for them.

I was considering savings bonds, but they got rid of the old paper ones I used to get as a kid. No good alternative that I know of.

Depends on age and depends on if they are a godchild or not.

I understand you probably give more for a godchild. What do you give a normal niece or nephew? And does the amount go up as they get older?

We just buy a $25 ot so present for ours.
I'm lunch with my brother in law as he and his wife send a $100 check to our kids. It goes into their savings accounts

Haven't used it yet, but this seems pretty cool: SparkGift - give stocks and gift cards to buy stocks.

MadMoney video on Stockpile which are gift cards for stock: LINK
