re: What do you spend on niece and nephew birthday presents?

There were times I spent $100, but then I went down to $50 and now $25.
Little brats don't give a shite. They couldn't remember the next day if I gave them a present or not. So why waste my $$$.

I try to keep it simple... no more than 2500 or so

I'm sure I'll spend a crap ton more on markers, colors, paint, paint brushes and art paper over the next couple of years, though.

Depends on how many people are in your family. My parents came from huge families. I have like 30-40 relatively close cousins. You'd go broke spending that much on people.
Both my wife and I came from 2 child families. My sister has 2 kids, we have 1, and that's it for now. We are all the God-parents of each others kids, so they get a good bit. But it's still like $100 at most. Unless it's something really useful for them. Like when my nephew was born, we got a lifetime fishing/hunting license. It was $250, but it's more than just a random birthday gift.

My nephews are 5 and 3 so it depends. Last year the favorite thing one of them got was like 4.99, but they have also gotten $50 Nerf guns. I'll just pick up whatever they like at the time. Usually around 25 bucks since they are so young.

My family just never was that big about presents and birthdays. I just don't understand the kind of gift budgets that some of these posts imply. $200 for each birthday for each nephew/niece? Gifts for the nephew/niece's step children? How much on parents and SO's? Whole thing seems to imply thousands and maybe even tens of thousands spent on gifts each year. If this is legit, and I have my doubts, then it's incredible waste and unnecessary expenditures.

Nothing. I have too many nieces and nephews.

Sounds real simple. I plan on spending that much on them from now until infinity.

$20 - $25 is the correct answer.

$20 for the illegitimate ones.
This works as long as they are in school and nothing once married.

Thanks, this seems a little low given that I only have two and the most I will ever have is probably 4 or 5.
I figure $50 for birthday, $50 for xmas. So $200/year now and that will max out at about $400/$500.
The thing that sucks is my wife and I will probably not have kids, so no reciprocation.

I have 2 nephews and 1 niece. One of my nephews is my godchild who turned 14 yesterday. I give him cash, that's what he wants.
The other two, they are in their twenties, I stopped giving them gifts at 18. Me being their uncle is as good of a gift as one can ask for.

There is no correct answer. We all have different levels of OT baller status.

What's the best way to look at this? Percent of pre-tax income? .0005%/holiday?

Dunno, wife and I just look at all of the gifts we need to give people throughout the year. We then look at our disposable income, decide on a total amount to spend and then divide by the number of gifts.

Maybe I should drop down to $25 instead of $50.

We spend $0 usually now that they aren't really young and typically don't have family at their parties. Me and my siblings have 8 kids combined so we don't even do Christmas gifts from aunts and uncles.
