What do you say to people who are considering a for-profit online education?

Our nanny is considering some garbage course being offerd by a for profit outfit.

Should I just pretend it’s a good idea, or give her sage career advice?

For her sake, give her good advice. Introduce her to distance learning programs, or online universities associated with physical schools.

Is she taking this class to learn something specific or is trying to work towards a degree? What kind of money are we talking here?

If she enrolls at SNHU she will not need to know geography...so she can short-cut that requirement.

Most schools are for profit, they just reinvest their profits or put them into funds and dont label them as profit.

It all depends on the degree she seeks.

Unless it is STEM, your degree is worthless.

All colleges are for profit as well. Every last one of them.

I don’t disagree, but it’s how the ITT Techs of the world are referred to.

I'm considering CU Denver Business School's online MS in Global Energy Management for working professionals.

Don't do it, the "degrees" aren't worth the paper they're written on. There are plenty of legitimate schools that have online degree programs. Furthermore, these schools won't distinguish the online degree from a traditional on campus degree.

Do the right thing. I was telling the wife the other night that they have damn good commercials. These people are usually first-generation college students and literally don't know any better.

Some schools have really good programs that are indistinguishable on a resume after graduation.

Others have awful programs and the names are actually red flags on resumes.

Choose wisely.

ETA:

Only get degrees from schools that are reputable brick and mortar institutions. Pure online schools are mostly scams.

I'm working on my MBA from Auburn while I live in Nashville. It's the same curriculum with the same teachers, I just watch recordings of the classes each day. The MBA will not say "online" on my resume either.

Give her sage career advice but don't be surprised if they don't take it. Had a cousin that paid an absurd amount of money to go to a for-profit to become a dental assistant. We tried to tell her she could go get her associates at the community college for a hell of a lot cheaper and would be more likely to either move into a 4-year program or get a significantly better job.

Of course now she can't find anything that she would deem a "livable wage" with her for-profit degree.

A buddy of mine got his MBA from a for-profit business school. Seems to be paying off just fine for him. That piece of paper is worth something, and you're going to pay out the arse no matter where you go.

Edit: It is listed as a non-profit and accredited. It's not a traditional business school though.

I know, I just do not like how people still separate them still.

The public universities in my mind are far worse than the ITTs. The bubble will pop and it will be far worse than the mortgage and tech bubble.

So much wasted money in higher education that could be used to solve real problems.

You should be honest with her. In 99% of cases, someone should not do a for profit program. There are tons of other online options from respected universities.

if they are that lazy then they are beyond talking to as they will listen to you but ignore everything they hear because they have already chosen the easy lazy way out
