I lived in Jackson. Had a large group of friends and was having the time of my life. One day I picked up, left and haven't looked back
Seattle:
Actually like the weather
Don't like that people here are such statist

Seattle?? You are way braver than me. When my kids are out of college, I’ll bite the bullet and build a house at the farm in Flora. My hope is I’ll have enough money to build that and keep my Jackson house.

Franklinton La, inside town
Like: everything is 3 minutes away
Dislike: no place to get a drink in the evening. The town could support it but it’s frowned upon to drink there.
No high paying jobs.

Pros:
Scenery (Mountains and Sea)
Good people
Unique culture
Wildlife (land mammals and marine)
No road access. Keeps the population low.
Cons:
Weather. Its a rainforest, so its cloudy 70% of days.
Cost: Its one of the more expensive places to live in the country.

Like: it's cheap, quiet, minimal traffic and it's in the country
Don't: about the only thing I dislike is it's not as close to Mobile Bay as I'm accustomed to

What do you like most and least about where you currently live?
Baton Rouge
Like - Close to elderly family, Damn good Job (though not in BR), Can enjoy outdoor activities mostly all year.
Hate - Traffic, Watching it deteriorate into a slum, The constant smell of weed in every establishment parking lot.
Best way to describe it is Baton Rouge is the city version of a neighborhood that has gone to a majority of rentals properties. Still a few food folks but most just don't give a shite anymore and the people running it are only concerned about how much money they can make.

And if you could start over in a brand new area, what would it be?
A small town in the middle of nowhere, USA.

North Shore:
Least: Mosquitoes, termites, yellow flies. We live next to a wooded area near a river and the insects make it challenging to sit outside in peace. When we travel to someplace that was not built on a swamp and I can sit outside without getting bitten by any insects I get really excited.
Most: Local events (festivals, concerts, art markets, farmers markets, etc.), overall sense of community, town is walkable, general laid back vibe. And as much as I hate the insects, I love how beautiful the river and surrounding wooded areas are.

Pro: four seasons, high standards for academics, close enough to NYC to enjoy it, about 0% of trashy people
Con: it’s so damn expensive

Good: Fishing can be had for striper, bass, and sac-a-lait (they call 'em crappie up here) on Lanier and other lakes around the area. The Buford Dam tailwater is only twenty minutes away with some fine trout to catch. When you get tired of Lanier or the tailwater, the north Georgia mountains offer some great fly fishing far away from the crowds.
Not so good: Atlanta's tentacles are taking hold as more and more people move into Gwinnett, Hall, and Forsyth counties. Traffic is deteriorating, taxes are increasing, crime is increasing. But - we have "Constitutional Carry" laws now so that may aid in curbing the crime some.

Atlanta (ITP suburb)
Pros: Grew up here, lower cost of living, lots of stuff to do within a 15-20 min drive (including Midtown/Buckhead/Downtown) easy access to Hartsfield Airport
Cons: Traffic, minimal MARTA options, sprawl

Like: near family; conservative and based population
Dislike: weather and poors
Wife and I are leaving tomorrow for a long weekend in Chattanooga. We are thinking that area of the country is where we’ll retire. Going to check it out.

Most places are generally the same but without family, friends, and food, it doesn’t seem to be that there is a good reason to stay in Louisiana tbqh.
Cost of living is low!

Old Metairie
Most
The weather. - Spring and Fall are great and winter is mild. Summers can be rough but not terrible.
The people are more calm and less driven than in most of America.
The food scene is good
My family is mostly here
Least
No wall on the Orleans Parish line

You can buy land out near DFW but Louisiana is probably a better bang for your buck

Tomball TX (north of Houston)
Likes:
I love my house and neighborhood. Good people all around.
Houston has so many LA transplants that I can get any Cajun food or ingredients that I need pretty easily.
Job opportunities here are really good.
The mild weather in the fall and winter allows lots of time outdoors.
Dislikes:
I miss my LA family and friends. My parents are getting older (late 70s) and I know my time with them is getting short. I try to make it back to visit more but I fricking HATE that drive. I've been here over 20 years and I'd love to never travel that section of I-10 again.
It's a big concrete skillet. Flat, over populated, and boring for the kinds of outdoor stuff I like to do. All of my hobbies are best done otherwhere. (kayak fishing, mountain biking)
Traffic here sucks all the arse.
Last summer, also known as the devil's a-hole, has me questioning my ability to stay here and deal with this miserable humidity and heat.
I am glad to be here, but will not retire here. The wife and I are talking about either South Carolina, Arkansas, or TX hill country. Someplace with clear water rivers and streams and elevation changes.

I moved 5 years ago from South LA to MS for a place with the following:
Better demographics
Better schools
Lower cost of living
No flood risk
Cheaper insurance
Much less people
And I couldn’t be happier. If this place grows too much I’ll move further into the sticks. The older I get the less I like being in busy places and around large numbers of people.
