Wife's uncle enjoyed The Glenlivet so we got him a bottle for Christmas two years ago not knowing that he had just started going to AA a few weeks earlier.
Happy ending though, he drank it after concluding that "wasn't nothing but a bunch of damn drunks at those meetings."

A family member of mine was a heroin addict. He still may be...I don't know. Anyways one Christmas I gave him a dollar bill in a card and wrote this is what your life is worth. Needless to say I didn't stay for Christmas dinner.
