No, he told me he didn't think it was solvable, so he knows that's an answer. He just wanted to see if I agreed

It's the second day of class, the teacher is probably giving them unsolvable problems to get them thinking about what is needed to solve algebra problems.

Paige.... I got both my daughters through high school and college algebra and geometry. You just need to skim the chapter he's working in. If you've seen it before it surprisingly easy how quick you pick it back up. Most kids disregard the book but everything is laid out in the chapter he's working in.
Also as previously mentioned watch a few Khan Academy videos to reinforce the basics before diving in the book. This is a great site and will help both of you understand the concepts.

mathway.com, it only gives you the answer, you have to subscribe to get the work shown. Has helped me a lot.

I'll watch the khan videos
They don't have books anymore
(Srs. not dumb in math. Made a 27 in it on my act. I know that's subpar for the OT though)

I don't just want the answers. I want to be able to guide him to find them on his own
P-4=-9+p
add 4 to both sides
p= -4+p
subtract p from both sides
0=-4
nope

Do they just do everything off of a computer or are they given a packet of some kind? There must be something to guide them on how to find the correct answer.

i wouldn't over react too much after the first day or two ... if it's a review, the teacher might be throwing in some real tricky questions to make the students think ... drink some tea ...

She was helping my 13 year old sister with homework recently and got so worked up that she gave my sister a panic attack and she was on the floor crying and hyperventilating and my little brother had to intervene
