$90k-$250k depends on your social status, occupation and what part if the state you're from.

Has the board come to a consensus on what constitutes upper middle class for a Louisiana family?
My vote is above 300% of the median, starting at roughly $150K per household.

I understand you now. I think most of the disbelief is because of this board though. If this board was an accurate cross section of Louisiana's income, our tax revenue would be high enough to pave the streets with diamonds . I'm not saying that people are lying, but I don't think the people making average salaries are speaking up and it makes everything look inflated.

I pretty much agree with that. I got destroyed in the early pages of this thread for suggesting $250k as an upper limit

Price real estate in both locations and get back with me on that one.

Depends on the borough. Manhattan, maybe the difference is that substantial. Elsewhere, I don't think so.

Compared to Baton Rouge? I think the real estate values don't compare at all.

quote:

The median home value in Queens is $474,000

quote:

Brooklyn homes have a $629,450 Median sale price

quote:

The median home value in Bronx is $312,900.

quote:

The median sale price of a Staten Island home in June was $413,500

The median price of homes currently listed in Baton Rouge is $164,900

Cheapest borough is double Baton Rouge. That's a pretty big difference.

Have to jump in here. Class is less about a set income amount than it is about the nature of your work.

If we're using the 300% of median rule, then I'd add amend it to "300% of median in your area".

To a certain point I agree. The accountant making 80k is higher on the "class scale" than the uneducated oil field worker making 100k.

Upper middle class is about income and investments. How you can sustain a standard of living. IMO, the type of work you do has no bearing on this.

Societal class is about status among others who have the same or similar status socially, politically, etc.

The two mix but neither defines the other.

Personally, I don't lose sleep over the latter.

Is the median personal income actually 112K in your zip? If you are in an area with a high-end neighborhood mixed with more average areas and condos/apartments, that may explain the high median.

this type of "class" is entirely too dependent on the individual

150k salary (unless you love in NYC, Chicago, LA, or San Fran)

Doesn't have too much debt.

I definitely agree, that's why I only agreed with the statement to a certain point.

And to make the point even further - the South Bronx pulls down the median quite a bit more than Tigertown/NBR does to Baton Rouge - just on sheer quantity of homes.

Places the average Baton Rouger would consider living in The Bronx would be much closer to Queens in price range. So, really, you're talking the "typical" NY home, in either Queens or The Bronx - at least one that would be seriously considered, would be more like 2.5x to 3x the median BR home.

Just food for thought.

A bit less than "Lower Upper Class." Quite a bit more than "Upper Lower Class."

Which is crazy to me since those "cheapest" homes in NY wouldn't be considered livable by most on here yet could buy you a McMansion in most LA suburb neighborhoods. Quality of life $ for $ is much greater down here IMO.

My butler, maid and chauffeur. I compensate quite liberally for their services.
