You do make a good point about pensions.
Virtually every private company, who would have to pay, has eliminated pensions due to the extreme burden it places on a company for nonworking people.
Only government workers, because unlimited use of tax money coupled with politicians too afraid to really end them, get pensions.
Thanks to 50 year old retired government workers, our taxes will be paying for these flunkies for decades
The public pension crisis is going to hurt all taxpayers.
Ironically, weaker cities like Memphis were forced to make very painful decisions to switch to a defined contribution plan for their employees during the recession. They are in better shape for having done that.
Stronger cities like Chicago were not in a major crisis at the time and kicked the can down the road. It just created an even bigger public pension crisis that will hit in the next 10-20 years. Eventually taxpayers in places that have their shite together will have to bail them out.
It’s coming. And they aren’t even trying to right the ship right now.

True. Everyone is middle class. Even Anecdote Andy making $250K a year.

People are really, really stupid. This thread proves it.
Hurr durrr $175k is middle class.

I'm just saying...if a family of 4 making $120k a year in the South is "struggling" in any way, then someone isn't making the budget correctly.

Everyone likes to think they're in the middle class, since someone else always has it better.
"I can't live on less than 150k since I have to afford my modest house in my gated neighborhood while I send my kids to private school, and save for retirement"

How the frick am I out of touch? Is that rich somewhere, is that poor somewhere?
I’ve lived my whole working life between $80 and $220, explain to me what I don’t know.

Is middle class supposed to be struggling? Y’all are all over the place.

In an average cost of living situation, I would say $60-$90k for a family of 4 is middle class, $90-$120k upper middle class.
For a family this is absolutely correct.
I've said it a bunch in these threads, but it cracks me up that families making $200k+/yr want to be considered middle class so badly.
You're upper class at that level. Granted, I realize that level goes into the stratosphere, but in no way, shape, or form are you middle class or even upper middle class.

Depends where. 120k should do it most places.
In any of the top population centers, $120k doesn't get you near as much
Both me and the ol lady each make 6 figure salaries, no children, in S.F. and I feel we are hardly considered 'middle class'

That is the truth in all of this noise. Everyone thinks they are middle class because everyone knows a least one person or family making more than them so it skews their idea of middle.
Plus it feels good to say "I'm middle class" just like everyone else.
Even if we type this from our cushy offices with our six figure plus salaries.

We made $85 combined in SF after college and we were broke. $100+ in NOLA and we still had to rent.

I always assume the southern US in these types of threads, which I would guess is around $80k for a family of 4.

Middle class is the middle quartile incomes. It's pretty straight forward.
The only reason the water is muddied is because a shite ton of this board was raised upper class and was told it was middle class, so their view is warped. People typically have no clue how many people are making it on far, far less than they are.

I make about 65k a year and wife stays at home, we have 4 kids, one in college. If I’m poor, I just haven’t realized it yet. I’d probably fall in the low class on whatever scale but we all seem pretty happy.

You're pretty safely in the lower middle class ranks. Congrats on living in the real world, unlike the majority of this thread.

When you can fully find your 401k and then cover all Bill's which include house, etc.

That's solidly upper middle class to upper class dude.
Have you seen the savings rate in America??
Have you seen the average balances in retirement accounts?

If you're saving $19,500-39,000/yr, you're almost certainly not middle class.
