My wife does this. She works from home half the time.

Relax, she will get back to you after her daily run to Ulta/Target.

I’ve met a lot of insurance agents who are frickups. Like basic stuff fricking up. So when you find a good one, count your lucky stars.

Yeah, they are pretty much like real estate agents.

Sell policies and rack up commissions.

I’m my experience, they are useless when claims and disputes arise.

Get away from big name and go with a smaller local agency.

If you are paying for farm bureau, State Farm, etc.. then you should be able to talk to your agent to assist. There may be some things where you have to talk to the adjuster but for mundane shite and questions you have, your agent should be able to assist. If he is just taking your money you should move to a more active agent

Marketing which includes making you think you have a buddy right down the road in case something goes wrong.

Once it does, they give you an 800# or refer you to file your claim on-line.

PROFIT

Now you can just file the claim on your phone.

Asking them policy questions is virtually useless as well.

We deal with homeowners insurance every day and it's amazing to me that virtually everybody knows nothing about what type of policy they have because the agent can't even inform them on it.

The agent sells the insurance. The claims department handles claims.

Why would the agent report your claim?

underwriters can't even inform the agents on policy questions.

I have a situation where I need to talk to my local agent but they won't seem to return emails/calls for days. This is with one of the big boy agencies (i.e. State Farm/Geico/Progressive) but I'm curious... are these local offices nothing but a middleman? Do they do anything other than just forward claims?

Right after Katrina, I remember a situation where my roof was leaking and I needed to file a claim. I called my agent at the time and he ended up giving me an 800 number to call. I was like "Wait, why aren't YOU calling them?" and he was like "well you'll get quicker service just going direct." We ended up leaving him after that. And I really haven't needed anything from them by and large ever since. Now I have a situation with a car and I'm getting a bunch of hassle. I've spoken with more people people on 800 numbers than my local agent who doesn't seem to be bothered not fighting for me or doing anything.

It's beginning to dawn on me - what do these people actually do? Just hustle business and then pass you off up the chain? They seem pretty useless other than being a pretty face on a billboard or a bus stop advert.

Is this one of those FOR SURE soon-to-be casualties of the AI revolution? Because they aren't really doing themselves any favors.

much of the actual claims process is now centralized but the local agent can help a lot on advise on what you should and shouldnt have covered. Also advise on changes and they absolutely can help you on expediting the claims process and can fight for you if they believe it is a legit claim.

a good agent will have someone call you back that day even if they are unavailable. They will remind you if you need to think about changing coverages on things, how to file claims etc.

and i highly doubt the local agent is going away anytime soon and with a lot of companies they own the book of business.

The model is changing slightly as is compensation but it's not going away. Moving towards more FS driven activity including retirement and financial planning

I wish it was as easy as everyone thinks.

Train employees, play psychiatrist to employees (and customers), help customers through claims, explain rate increases, meet with customers for policy reviews, answer a million hypothetical questions for customers, community events, pay a million bills, etc. That’s what takes up my days. Still haven’t picked up golf.
