We had a budget for about 300 dollars. That included a gift. We did it at our home and cooked hot dogs for the adults and bought juice for the kids. Rented a fun jump for them to play on and it was great we've actually done this for 2,3 and 4.

I don't have kids, but I would spend nothing. That said, realistically I'd go to Wal Mart and buy a shitty cake so my wife would be happy and feel like she was doing something.
Two year olds don't have birthdays. They just have a random day where other people eat cake.
Okay, internet tough guy we get it.
OP, just roll with it and enjoy the day. Tons of other stuff to stress out about this isn't one of them.

More like Internet broke dick.
When he has kids and a wife, and they want to party, he won't stand a chance.

I don't have kids, but I spent $1,600 on a play structure and then flew to CA to put it together for my nephew's 3rd birthday. And he helped! It was fricking AWESOME(!) and worth every nickel.
Six years later, he and his younger brother are still using it. Best money I've ever spent! (with the possible exception of that time with the hooker and an eight ball in Vegas...)

We got some cupcakes. $30? We had our typical Sunday dinner with both sides of the family. No "friends" were invited. Kids don't have friends until they are 6. Before that, it's just a pageant for your wife.

obviously not "friends" that they call on the phone or anything, but most kids love playing with other kids

$200 would be a good upper limit. What exactly is she trying to do for a 2 year old?
I mean 7-10 yr olds in BR like shite like Area 51, Premier Lanes(bowling/games/laser maze in Gonzales),Laser Tag, Skate Galaxy(with video games and laser tag), Rockstar Go-Karts, etc.
That shite is expensive but the kids get alot out of it in terms of fun/experience/memories.

This sounds good. Can even be cheaper by just buying an inflatable pool or two and a slip n slide.

I knew a buddy who's wife spent $1500 on their kids 1 year-old birthday party.
I LOL'ed in his face, and told him to enjoy being broke.

My kids weren't in day care or "Parent's Day Out" at two. I have two boys, 16 months apart. They are best friends. I just feel at two years old, kids don't get it and the party is for the adults.
I have an acquaintance that spent nearly 10k on his kid's 1st birthday. You tell me who that show was for.

my 2 year old and all the other kids had a blast in the jump house
obviously they have no idea what a birthday party means but they still have a lot of fun

right, it can obviously become too much and become a time for the parents to show off
I was just didn't understand your "2 year old can't have friends" comment

Probably the cost of the cake .. Walmart style. It's a two year old ...
Eta, I'm the mom. It's ridiculious and yes I love my kids. Dtr was 14 on the 14 and she invited her whole class to the house. Spent $50 on decorations, $150 on pizza, chips, soft drinks and had way too much left over.
Ended up with 35 kids. Stop the madness people!

If I said "can't have friends" that isn't what I meant. At two my oldest had 2-3 other kids that he played with from convenience for my wife.
I can understand and appreciate putting up a jump-house and hanging out. It just wasn't something we considered. Had he Family cam over and watched him shovel cake in his face.
Now he's going into kindergarten and I am forced to invite every kid from his class. So I'm glad a saved a few bucks in the early going.

Our plan for my son's 2nd birthday is to get a bounce house and invite our friends with or without kids and family over and just have a BBQ in the back yard. Our only issue will be if the weather doesn't cooperate, no idea what to do then. Our parents will buy him stuff, we probably won't buy him a present. I don't know the market for bounce houses but I doubt I will spend more than 150 bucks past that cost.

My SIL is going way overboard on my nephew's 1st birthday despite the fact that she's broke. Luckily for me, my wife has seen how ridiculous it is and decided to keep our daughter's 1st bday more low key and focused on the adults having fun(we don't have a lot of other friends/family with babies).
The spots we're looking at right now are Top Golf or a brewery.

Why are men so totally afraid to lay the law down with their wives these days? I seriously, absolutely do not understand this. If they're willing to get into some type of blow-up over you not dropping a grand on a 2 year old's birthday party then you should've never married this broad in the first place.
Look this isn't alpha-OT-baller stuff. This is just simple math. It's a 2 year old who will be able to recall jack squat from this time in his life. From birth to the age of 4 or so, my only memory is the first time I could reach my Incredible-Hulk-covered-lightswitch plate in my room to turn the fan and the light on and off.
That's it. Do you think your child GAF about the cost of a party or what you do at it? This is totally and completely for you or your wife's ego and id.
Seeing sh!t like this is nauseating. You aren't doing anything for your kids. You could give them a brick for their birthday and feed them ice cream at 2 years old and they'd be effing ecstatic and wouldn't remember a THING about it a year from now. If this is what it takes to make your wife happy, get ready for one helluva pleasant marriage, OP, lemme tell ya.
Get over yourselves, people.
