Kobe is significant because of his impact he had on me as a sports fan growing up. The memories I have playing ball with my brother trying to shoot like him while shouting KOBE I’m forever grateful for.

Dale Earnhardt
Quit watching and following NASCAR all together not long after. And I grew collecting autographs and diecasts.

Heard the news while in the middle of a camping trip in the mountains. Listened to SRV all the time during that period in life.

Very few, if any. I don’t revere famous people. I appreciate their talent but I don’t know them personally...and I’m not going to act as though I do at their passing.
Steve Jobs’ passing stands out to me, mainly because I wonder what advancements he would have driven for mankind.

Layne Staley. Felt his pain through his music. He helped people through their own pain without even knowing it. I knew people fighting his battle, and hated to see him go.

Not sure of "impact," but a cause for a moment of a tear or a moment of reflection. Maybe that is "impact."
I'm truly sad about Kobe and his daughter and the others today, and his wife and family have my family's prayers.
As for your question, it can be long, but here are a few in just a few seconds off the top of my head:
Ronald Reagan...GOAT Pres of the 20th Century; I watched every second of his laying in state to the funeral procession to his final burial.
Stevie Ray Vaughan....damned shocking and so damned talented (how ironic helicopter crash like Kobe);
Ronnie Van Zant.....loved Lynrd Skynrd.
Janis Joplin......how tragic and pathetic for such a talent.
Jim Croce; John Denver; Jimi Hendrix......
There are a lot of shining star celebrities that are/were on the top of the mountain that make one reflect upon their passing, even if their passing is under different circumstances. It is just the way life is I guess.
Your thread does not suck, and have an upvote. I just named a few in a few seconds in answer to your question, but I'm sure if I thought more there would be others that caused me to pause for at least a moment.

Honestly none. I don’t know any. I feel bad for them and their families like I would anybody else who dies though.

Davey Allison and Dale Earnhardt were my two favorite people in the world when I was a kid. I got to meet Davey at talladega the year before after he won the race so when he died it really upset me.
Seeing someone like Kobe die is almost surreal. He was larger than life and just almost seemed invincible.
Chris Cornell is another one...he was one of my favorite musicians ever and after what he did to himself, I can’t listen to his music anymore. All I hear in his voice is pain.

Kobe surprisingly hit me hard today.
I grew up pretending to be Kobe in my driveway even though he was only a few years older than me. I tried to model my game after his. I would practice my fade-away till my Mom would call me inside.
Now as adults, again, we were roughly the same age and I also have all girls. I just can’t imagine that feeling of going down while holding your daughter. Incredibly tragic.
