Apparently you need reading comprehension because I've stated several times parents are huge. However, quality educators are important as well.

Parents need to give teachers a better product to work with.

(Its not the teachers that need or lack, it's the kids and their dumb arse parents is why Louisiana education is shite)

You do not have a statewide curriculum. You have a set of standards and a list of things that should be covered. But how you cover it is up to you and your district or school. Some people are good at it, some are not. I’ve worked in schools where no one ever verified what was actually being covered and I venture to guess some admins have no idea about the standards or assessment that is outside of their own content.

People have been hitting the nail on the head: home environment and socioeconomic issues. You can fix the educational system but the kids will stay fricked up from what goes on outside of school. It is akin to people winning the lottery and going broke. It should solve your financial problems but it won't because you make bad choices.

I believe the entitlement culture is why public schools are failing. Everyone is forced to go to school. If education were not compulsory, it would be valued and appreciated. Instead, it is mandatory and many see no value in it.

I am appalled daily at the number of students who obviously do not care if they inherit the trailer park home of their parents. How can you have no desire to better yourself?

And for test scores and teachers, imagine for a minute that a teacher’s score is tied to the growth of a student who is in high school, reads on a 4th grade level, will be taking a test at the high school reading level, and who will click any answer without reading because who gives a crap. Now imagine that is how your effectiveness is determined. It’s a bad model. Maybe parent report cards should be sent home each year?

Disagree, a real educator can inspire a student who doesn't care to actually care. Is it rare? Yes but it does happen and a quality teacher who is passionate about their field can inspire several students.

You got all your learning about teaching from tv and movies. Ron Clark says hi!

There is a massive problem when the teacher cares more than the parent(s).

School you attend should be merit based. The poorer the school scores are, the more incentives teachers there are offered to raise those schools scores.

Trade schools should be mandatory to certain students below "x" score at 14. This gives them 2 years to learn a trade. At 16 if no improvement is made, that student is purged from the system and may only receive state/welfare benefits after sterilization.

Yeah lets go to Chicago, Detroit, Philly, and the entire state of West Virginia. It's 100% a southern thing
