The theory: the cultural differences between the north, the south, the backcountry/west, and the midwest can be traced back to the parts of britain the original settlers of these areas came from, and that all non-british immigrants later on were assimilated into these 4 distinct cultures

quote:

The four migrations are discussed in the four main chapters of the book:

East Anglia to Massachusetts

The Exodus of the English Puritans (Pilgrims and Puritans influenced the Northeastern United States' corporate and educational culture)[4]

The South of England to Virginia

The Cavaliers and Indentured Servants (Gentry influenced the Southern United States' plantation culture)[5]

North Midlands to the Delaware Valley

The Friends' Migration (Quakers influenced the Middle Atlantic and Midwestern United States' industrial culture)[6]

Borderlands to the Backcountry

The Flight from North Britain (Scotch-Irish and border English influenced the Western United States' ranch culture and the Southern United States' common agrarian culture)[7]

Fischer includes satellite peoples such as Welsh, Scots, Irish, Dutch, French, Germans, Italians and a treatise on enslaved Africans in South Carolina. Fischer covers voting patterns and dialects of speech in four regions that span from their Atlantic colonial base to the Pacific.

Seemed to make sense to me. Plus I think people eventually assimilate with culture of their region so if you move to NE eventually you will start to tilt that direction.

Is this the theory that says ghetto culture was adopted from poor redneck culture?

Thomas Sowell agrees with this and he’s way smarter than me so I’ll leave it at that.

Great thread! And I subscribe to such a theory, the Scots-Irish were were some of the most warlike clans and brought that fighting spirit and rebelliousness with them.

The English can suck a dick.

This country was built by people that wanted to be free. Free from the English, free from the French, the Spanish, the Chinese.

Oh come on

These officers clearly just have their horses dressed up as ghosts. To be cute and silly for the kids.

The Louisiana purchase conflicts with parts of the theory. Florida was also Spanish culture overtaken by English settlers. How else can you explain “Florida Man?”

Good point. Theory sounds good but with some outliers esp in the gulf south.

Don’t try to put Florida Man on the Florida Parishes.
