Why does being alive or dead matter in your reasoning? Are you saying it makes more of a good person to spend all of his/her savings to donate and chance not having enough before they die? What kind of fricking logic does that follow?

I'm not going to that extreme. No need to turn yourself into a pauper. But if you donate little to nothing during your life, then when the money is of no use to you and is about to transfer into the possession of someone else, you then redirect it elsewhere, I'm disinclined to give you much credit for having done so, regardless of whether the new target is a charity.
If you do donate during life, and kick in some extra after you die (particularly if you die a bit younger than expected), then good on you.

So you give more credit to someone giving $100 a month and dying a millionaire and not giving any more to charity than that same person dying and giving all their fortune to charity?

Nope, but that's a fancy looking strawman you built.
I give credit to those who make/made some level of sacrifice to donate to charity. I do not give credit to those who make/made no sacrifice in order to donate to charity.
So, applied to your hypothetical, I wouldn't give much, if any, credit to either of them.

Unless I have some catastrophic health expense or die very young, the odds that my heirs don't see some measure of windfall are vanishingly small.

The plan is to spend it all and have a blast before I die. Wife and kids can split up the life insurance policies.

I’ve never really understood when people wait until they pass to start sharing their money. Especially rich people.
For instance, knew a family where the parents had millions and did not share with children until they passed. They did not pass until close to 90 and by then kids were 60+. Then the cycle repeated. In the end, 2 generations could have started sharing with their children sooner and improved their life styles but they chose not to do that.
I don’t care what others do, but I always have said that if I’m in a similar position I’m going to start sharing way sooner and get to witness my kids / grandchildren enjoy the money.
Whatever is left over 80/90% heirs and 10/20% church

Fact is, unless you die suddenly and young, most don’t have much left when they die....those last several months of life typically burns through a whole lifetime of saving.
