It may unfortunately be the case that competition is so deeply integrated into our DNA that, absent extreme psychological programming from positive cultures that took millennium to develop, our default state might be one that constantly pulls us towards confrontation and conflict. We just keep finding new ways to justify it.
Which is why letting post-modernists throw away Christianity and American idealism is such a horrible strategy. Cultural norms didn’t develop out of a vacuum, almost all of them evolved to address a problem. Throwing away those norms without understanding them is extremely selfish, and potentially dangerous. Chesterton’s Fence.

Power.
Either to expand it or to defend it. Everything I can think of is some variation of those two concepts.

Territorial. Even most attributed to religion are really ultimately territorial.

Aside from Helen of Troy, what wars were started just bc one side wanted pussy?
I recall in the Bible that Levites attacked a city to steal women for the men of Benjamin. Any other times?

Resources, which usually equals land since that's where the resources are located.

Did Cleopatra cause wars?
I don’t think so. Romans wanted Egypt and she happened to be the ruler at the time.
