Once you start drinking, you are powerless over stopping AND once stopped, by either a stint in hospital, jail, or some other obstacle and sober for a period of time, you are now powerless over starting again thus setting in motion the inability to stop again. CANT CONTROL THE START AND ONCE STARTED CANT CONTROL THE STOP. AN obsession of the mind (I need to drink so I start again) coupled with an allergy of the body (I can't stop once I start) all wrapped up in a spiritual malady.

when you lie, cheat, and steal from your family and employer just to chase that miserable feeling again, and again, and again .....

Blackouts, can't only drink one, upheaval in your life, family pissed, making sure you never run out of booze at your house, everything you do revolves around drinking, hiding how much you drink, trouble with the law, dents in your car, and the list goes on ad nauseum.
Forgot the lying, justifying, cheating, everyone else is to blame. "I'm not an alcoholic -- they are just assholes. You'd drink too."

Ditto, and that last sentence is correct. After 10 years, he almost died, but was lucky to get liver and kidney transplants. If he would've waited one or two more days to go to the hospital, he would've died.

So I went in his room, and thought he had powerade bottles of dip spit on his nightstand. Turns out it was horrible, plastic bottle whiskey. He was drinking it while literally on his death bed. The most jaundiced I've ever seen (even on TV). Hadn't eaten in a couple of weeks because he was so sick, but was drinking still. I had no idea. Just thought he was lazy and liked to sleep a lot. Found some of my missing bottles and 36 handles of the cheap shite hidden in his room.

Nasty stuff.

Binge drinking at a party or bar =/= alcoholic. It just means you make bad decisions and have shitty impulse control. Can't tell you how many people and industry "experts" I've had to explain that to. Look up what actual professionals say addiction is.
