Bingo. She missed that part. We were talking specifically about the ice caps not in Canada or Greenland. She forgot they were floating.

Some of the folks under the age of 25 or so don't realize that there was a time when the internet didn't exist, or that we once stopped at gas stations to use pay phones if we needed to make a mobile call.

pay phones

Saw one at the Orlando airport the other day and almost took a picture of it to prove to people they still existed

It's scary to think of some of the people educating our children. It makes me angry because these dumb m'fers don't realize how dumb they are and are spreading their stupidity. Oblivious and inconsiderate.

I knew a couple of generally well-informed guys in their 30's at the time who didn't know who Sgt. York was.

The main reason that surprised me is the movie is on every single Memorial Day over and over and over.

Where would someone get 180F from?

I have no idea, the first time I heard someone say this was at an old job of mine. I then asked 4 other people that we worked with, what the boiling point of water is.Each one answered 180 degrees.
I was shocked.
Later it occurred to me,that there is a 180 degree swing from freezing point to boiling, so maybe this is where they were confused?

Yeah, think about how dumb the average person is. Half the people in the world are dumber than that.

I'm not real sure my wife could tell you who generally fought whom in World War I or World War II.

She's from Vicksburg, so she knows a little more about the Civil War.

I don't understand how any educated person can't have a basic, reasonably intelligent discussion about the origin of Western Civilization. I'm not talking details, I'm talking something as basic as
Egyptians to Greeks to Romans to the fall of the Byzantine Empire to the dark ages to the Renaissance to colonialism, etc.

My girlfriend didn't know that a 'couple', a 'few', and 'several' all had different numerical meanings

I'm afraid that you're over the head of about 90% of the population right there.

The fall of Byzantium was more like in between the Dark Ages and the Renaissance, rather than pre Dark Ages.

I saw someone put a belt on the opposite way than I always do and was like "hey you're putting your belt on backwards." He looked at me weird and I had a sudden realization that belts can go around either way

You've never been in the military have you?

What do you do with Northern Ireland, then?

It's part of Great Britain and not a part of the other landmass that you called the island of Great Britain.

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom--along with Great Britain. It's formal name is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

Great Britain is England, Scotland, and Wales.

Britain is one island. Ireland is another. Together with the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man they make up the "British Isles".

This is one of those things that I'm surprised people don't know and that they screw up.

Friend of mine thought only milk could come from the "black and white" cows. He was about 20 at the time.

Obviously we're talking geography with that one.

But here's one:

After flattening out between 2010 and 2011, the Federal Deficit has been decreasing.
