There is an AI wave coming. I would advise a young person to read “Augmented: Life In The Smart Lane” and several similar books to avoid entering a profession that will be made obsolete by tech in the next 20 years. For instance, Only in it’s infant stages, AI is already more accurate at diagnosing some ilnesses than doctors. Think how much cheaper and better healthcare will be when you’re not paying a human half a million dollars a year to make significantly more mistakes than a computer program.

One thing for sure about medicine, it's not black and white. Assessments highly dictate plan of care with sense of touch, smell and tactility. That's extremely difficult to duplicate with an algorithm.

This is a solid career as well, but what I would do is get another functional degree and learn IT with it. For example, get an accounting or finance degree and get a masters in data & analytics. That's where the serious money is at.

This.

A professional degree with a technical skill set is money.

You’ve got to be batshit crazy to go into construction management these days. It damn sure isn’t what it was 20 years ago.

The pay is good, but the stress never leaves. If you’re into your job, there is always something that is pressing. A week long vacation without job worries doesn’t exist these days, no matter who you leave overseeing your duties.

Maybe that is your experience but I work during the week to enjoy my time off. When I am on vacation, I do not think or worry about work. Does that mean I may have some extra stress when I get back? Sure, but my time away is my time to recharge.

Another thing that’s for sure about medicine is that it kills a lot of people every year

That’s a Rwandan genocide every 2 years.

True. I’ve read where the average person changes careers 5-7 times in their life.

I think unless you're a master craftsman or very specialized intellectual it should be that way. No one ever holds the same interests over a lifetime.

AI and automation will totally change life for most people who are under 30 today.

Accounting with a Petroleum minor or just a few classes. Work for a few years then jump to oilfield....best chance to get to CEO level.

Safest paths that don’t require a ton of advanced education.

However, I feel like many in our generation were suggested to do these things without any regard for enjoyment in them. But yeah, they are the safest and most conservative career paths that go through college.

I agree with others that suggest doing some serious aptitude mining. I have a friend that is an entomologist (bug scientist) and he is probably the happiest person in his career I know.

IT. Anything programming related.

Avoid Chemical and Environmental Engineering unless you can be one of those superstar student.

Other STEM based majors like Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, etc you should expect to go to grad school if you actually want a job in that field.

absolutely agree with this...I see kids getting engineering degrees who have never had the slightest interest in such things. I have to wonder what their ultimate career path will look like.

Computer science and electrical engineering. Both will see continued growth, and most successful startups for college grads use one of those two degrees. High pay from the start as well, relative to other college grads. Huge variety of industry and jobs for those degrees, it’s not like being a petroleum engineer and completely dependent on one industry
