We’ve always gotten two and I’ve made them throw in a third at the end, before agreeing.. Daughters lived out of town and wanted them to leave one with us for when they were in and one in their grandmother’s near where they went to college.

Depends on the manufacturer on how difficult/expensive it will be.
On GM's you can (could anyway) get the key with chip cut then go through a sequence that takes about an hour to program it yourself. Consists of cycling the key multiple times.
Saves having to pay the dealer to put the truck on the machine just to program the key.
And saves a tow to the dealer if you lose your keys....

I did one last year for a Lexus. I got the key black online for $25 and had it cut at a locksmith for $20. I found instructions for the exact model/year on youtube for programming. Took about 5 minutes to program to start the car and another 5 to program the locks. It was this crazy series of throttle/brake pushes, opening and closing the door, cycling the locks, turning the ignition on and off and pushing buttons on the key fob. I felt like I was getting Rick Rolled the whole time but it worked.

Go to the Wallmarks and get one made. Couple bucks or so. Unless it has a chip.

YouTube how to do it
I bought one on eBay and paid a small fee at the dealer I think. The key fob can be done easily but has to be programmed with unlocking and locking doors etc. It’s been awhile— Toyota

I tried this and it didn't work for me. Ordered a key FOB online, was " guaranteed " that it was the correct key for my vehicle. Brought key to a locksmith along with the vehicle. Turns out the key I ordered was not going to work.
The locksmith provided me with a key and programmed the FOB - it cost me approximately $100

carkeysexpress.com will be able to help you out. They have a local tech in a van that can cut and program it for you.

What’s the dealership charging? I had a new clicker and key made for my Tacoma and it wasn’t overly expensive. 200 ish?

Sounds like a good Punked or Candid Camera episode.
