maybe you should save your money instead of paying $200k for a 4 year undergrad degree

sounds pretty close to mine, public school, gifted designation, extra curriculars and sports, 24 act not 100% on the GPA thing but they had fun in high school and did what they needed to do. Said they because I have twins that both got in.
Best advice that I got was to find out who the admission recruiter is for your area and talk to them about the best way to apply. Apparently these days you can apply without the ACT score or something, I wasn't really paying attention, but both got in!

There is inflation in ACT scores over last 20-30 years
From my own observations, I have long suspected this.

Science is the easiest section of all. Most of the answers are clearly in the tables referenced by the questions and anything that isn't is something fairly obvious.
All you need to get a 28+ in science is learn to read graphs and only read the tables referenced in the question as the rest is filler. Should be a score padder.

Its a combination of better test prep and just actually inflating the scale a bit imo

What makes you assume I can’t do both?
I got two more kids right behind him too. Glad we started 529s when they were born. All are fully funded, but Jesus something’s gotta give.

From LSU:
quote:
Historically, LSU’s average weighted GPA is 3.83, and the average test score is 27 (ACT) or 1240 (SAT). If a student’s super score falls at or above these averages, it is generally seen that their test score could benefit their application.
If a student’s GPA is at or above the LSU average, but test scores are not, it is recommended they apply test optional, waiving the test score requirement.
In any case, if a student feels their test score is representative of their performance or will be a benefit to their application, it is recommended they submit the score.

I think a 23 act and mediocre GPA isn’t a sure thing these days but I might be wrong
ACT is weighted a lot more than GPA. For example: Nashville students make 3.0 gpas all day but the avg ACT is 17.

If this were the 1990s, it would be 100%. Today, I'd say it's more like 60-80% assuming your kid puts together a strong application.

Asking out of ignorance as a 1st gen UNO grad; does this matter at all school like LSU? I have heard about this at the Ivy and top tier private schools; but do State schools care
It used to matter if you were out of state. They had a Legacy scholly that would wipe out the OOS fees for kids of alums. They did away with that about 10-15 years or so ago.

If he doesn’t get into LSU he could certainly go to Ole Miss. Their acceptance rate is near 100%.

Taking an automatic 37% deduction for overinflated stats, try Nichols or BRCC.
Posted on 5/28/25 at 4:22 pm to TigerWerm
No worries. Ask for the legacy discount too. I think its $1000 off tuition.

A 23 is 70th percentile. It's fine.
Think about how stupid the average person is…. And then remember 50% are dumber than that

LSU doesn’t give jack shite to OOS students. I just dropped $200k for my son’s degree didn’t get a single penny.
LSU didn’t want to pay for your kid. Your kid didn’t meet LSU’s merit nor need based scholarship criteria.
Like all schools, they pay for the kids they want; but they need full fare kids to pay for the kids they want.
Go to a school that wants you! Don’t pay crazy money to be a 5th generational alumni.
