It's spirit.
Biggest reason is their seats have the least room in the industry, the least padding, and the least recline. Just a very uncomfortable ride if it's more than an hour n half or so.

Even though United sucks, I like the fact that I can drive home in 3 hours if I miss the last connection of the night.

It is a budget airline. You should go in expecting things like this.

Btw, spirit is ok on short flights. Their aircrafts are modern and they are usually on time.
Over two hours though, they are miserable. I fly from south Florida to vegas a lot. It's a 5.5 hour flight and spirit and American are the only two airlines that have the flight that fits my schedule. American has a 6:30pm that gets in at 9pm and spirit an 8pm that gets in at 10:30pm. Only nonstop flights I can catch after work on a Thursday or friday.
American flight is always 250-300 more, but I usually pick it as it's comfortable and I can sleep 3-4 hours. I've tried, but it's impossible to get comfortable enough to sleep much in those cramped hard arse no recline spirit seats

What airline is the worst?
I am going to go with US-Air/American. I had a good experience flying home a few weeks ago and I was mind blown. I was hoping that they had turned a corner in the merger and were getting their shat together, but the way back not so much. I flew back with American and the experience sucked. The only good thing about that day was the breakfast at the Irish pub in terminal B at DFW, I had one flight where the flight crew was late, couldn't find a gte because a plane was broke at our gate, the service sucked and the seats were uncomfortable as hell.
I am only flying Delta or Southwest anymore. Atleast Delta flys 717s and A319s into JAN and not a damn CRJ200. What is that a plane for ants?
ETA: I hear Ukrainine International Airlines, Cubana Airlines, and Angolian Airlines are pretty damn bad, but I bet they are better than American Airlines.

I've had the worst experiences with Delta airlines about 10 years ago.
Today, I think they are the best domestic airline and I fly with them every week. That said, if you plan to fly international often (not counting Western Europe), you should make friends with United or with an alliance carrier. I'm not a fan of KLM or AirFrance and they are Delta's big international partners.
Continental used to be good.
I imagine that US Air or United is the most constantly ranked as the worst domestic airline today.

In the past, I would've easily said American Airlines.
Now, it's still American Airlines. Also, Malaysian Airlines.

I never liked Northwest. BTW, Delta Airlines started as a crop dusting service in Tallulah, LA, until Huey Long and his goons ran them out of the state.

I like connecting in Dallas vs. Atlanta or Houston, but I've had the following delays on American (all in/out of Baton Rouge):
1) 5 hour delay because the label on some on/off switch in the cockpit fell off, and they had to fly a new one in from Dallas on the next flight - along with the mechanic because the union qualified mechanic in Baton Rouge was at a funeral...or something.
2) 4 hour delay because the strap on someones bag got caught in the cargo bay door. Had to fly mechanic in from Dallas to unbolt the hatch under the lavatory to get at it from the inside. Although it was funny watching the ground crew try to hang off of the door to get it open from the window
3) 30 minute delay pulling in on the tarmac because they forgot to check the batteries on those wands they use to guide airplanes.

I know that. My great grandfather was one of the original investors until he got pissy about them buying a plane to carry passengers and mail instead of another crop dusters.

American is the worst big league domestic airline.
Southwest is probably the best if you consider them in that category, or Delta in the alternative.

All American owned Airlines in the big picture of things suck.
Etihad, Qatar, Fly Emirates, Lufthansa, British Airways, Turkish Airways , Qantas,Korean Air etc all shite on every American owned airline and its not even close.

Jetblu is consistently ranked as the best domestic carrier in the annual customer satisfaction surveys.
I can attest to that, they are my favorite airline. Most comfortable seats, most leg room on average. And nice little tvs on every seat with a good selection. I flew them twice last year. On one flight the tvs stopped working half way through and they gave everyone a $40 voucher as a courtesy.
They are based out of the northeast though so less people on this board probably have a lot of experience with them. I rarely get to fly them as their selection here is limited and I don't think they even service Miami airport.
