My oldest is six, and I just realized that he doesn't know how to swim.

What's a good age to start lessons? Did you take swimming lessons, or learn by trial and error?

Around 7 or 8.

Dad took me to the middle of the lake and threw me out. Said I'd either swim or drown.

Was pretty easy after I got out of that sack.

I don't remember. I never took lessons. I recall being in an inner tube in the shallow end at age 3 and just gradually moving to non-floatie status to treading water and going to the deep end. I had a lot of opportunities to be in the pool though. We're probably going to do crawfish aquatics for our daughter this summer (she's 3).

5, just throw him in the water and he'll figure it out. Believe it or not swimming is pretty instinctual but if you start too late (8 or 9) it becomes a lot more difficult. I was a swim instructor back in high school

3 days after I was circumcised. 50 years later, still afraid of the water.
