But we're supposed to believe dishwashers and waiters wouldn't do the same?

Dishwashers and waiters don’t have specialized skills they can leverage in a different industry.

Dishwashers can sure as shite learn to hang drywall or lay flooring, can't they?

Tons of people are severs because they can make more money than using their degree at a 9-5, but if travel is down or restaurants are closed, they can go right back.

Bro, if you’re washing dishes it isn’t because you have an over abundance of employment options.
Same for waiting tables.

Can they learn? Sure, but how much demand is there for greenhorn drywall and flooring hands? Also why aren’t they Doing this before the pandemic? I’d have to imagine construction pays better than washing dishes.

When it’s between the out of work waiter and the meth head that only shows up twice a week, I’ll take the waiter and train him.

This is based on nothing other than ignorance.

Some people wash dishes because it's all they've done since they were in high school. Some people wash dishes because they have a peculiar home situation and that schedule fits perfectly. Some people wash dishes because they are going to graduate college in a year.

I'm sure there are some a-hole dishwashers who have no upward mobility due to circumstances unlikely to change. But this perception you seem to have that the guy washing dishes is dirt is really immature.

You could be the dishwasher. You aren't better than the dishwasher. We are all humans, and aside from the very tail ends of the distribution, most of our capabilities are limited by the same human factors.

It's really sad that all this boils down to you think you're above the guy in the back of the house washing your dishes.

The lack of people coming to work on a J-1 visa is only exasperating the issue. According to the US Department of State over 300,000 students came to the US on a J-1 visa to work in 2019. The number this year is under 10% of that number, mainly due to travel restrictions and a ban in applications that expired on March 31st of this year.

You’re projecting, I said no such thing.

ETA: btw I was a dishwasher in college, at Pizza Hut in fact. At the time my employment options were limited because I was a kid who didn’t know shite.

My friends in the industry tell me most of the drywall crews are Mexicans, and they blow everyone out of the water. I’ll take the Mexicans, you can limit your choices to drug addicts and unskilled students / teenagers.

This isn’t new, and is another reason many Americans won’t work.

Many dishwashers and busboys in my area are also Hispanic. Easy job to get, probably allows them to swap off shifts for childcare, etc for a group that may all be sharing a house.

But if that convenient job no longer exists, shite yeah they're getting on drywall and roofing and paint crews, especially since those guys are also seeing tons of business and need workers.

Were you not reading the thread? The whole discussion is about places being unable to hire people.

The jobs exist, but the checks from Uncle Sam are a lot easier than going to work.

Looks like you weren't.

Specifically talking about people who would have left the restaurant/service industry entirely during last years Covid lockdowns.

You have to remember that most of these places had to lay off or let go people because of the Pandy (thanks Trump). Now we are starting to open back up places are trying to fill those positions. Instead of it being a handful of stores here or there it's every fast food, restaurant, retail store etc etc. Everyone trying to hire at the same time. Once schools let out they'll fill most of these remedial positions

True, but when the reason for the signs is because people are being supported by the government instead of finding a job
all they have to do is pay more than $300 a week, and people will line up at the door. Shouldn’t be that hard for any successful business

You do realize these people are being paid the $15/hr equivalent for 40 hr week as pandemic supplemental unemployment despite never making that much per hour or working 40 a week. These jobs will fill when the supplemental UE benefits end.
